Opinions on creating a bilingual Youtube channel

I have a website and a Youtube channel dealing mainly with electronic, automotive and science stuff.

The videos (17 so far!) are all in my native tongue, Greek.

I have found several topics that aren’t adequately covered by other english-speaking Youtube videos. For example, there are several videos demonstrating the pipe and magnet effect, but none of them gives a proper explanation of the phenomena involved.

And since I want to expand my audience, I am thinking of making some videos in English.

But on the other hand, I don’t want to alienate my greek audience.

My options so far are the following:

  1. Do my videos in Greek as usual, then add English subtitles.
  2. Do the videos in English with Greek subtitles
  3. Do two separate versions of the same video (that’s way too much work and I want to avoid that)

Is option 1 viable? They say that native english speaking people have an aversion to subtitles.

Any other ideas?

Shrug, the “do it in English and subtitle in Greek” option might be better for the EFL market, but the ESL market wouldn’t have more of a problem with “Greek subtitled in English” than with that, and this option means you don’t need to redo your current videos.

I’m a native speaker of English who speaks absolutely zero Greek.

My vote is for videos in Greek with English subtitles. Given your subject matter, my guess is that the segment of the population that avoids subtitles isn’t your target market, anyway.

It might make sense to write the title in both languages and include the phrase “subtitled in English” to increase your views. I know that some people won’t click on a video with a title in a foreign language, because they assume it won’t be subtitled.
