Putting subtitles on video

I’ve installed two programs, read some Google, asked for help in another thread, and I can’t find how to do this.

I have a Flash and an mpg file of the same video clip, and I’d like to put subtitles on it (it’s Downfall, for you youtube nerds). I can’t seem to convert to wmv (for MS Movie Maker) with VLC player or the two new programs, and the two websites I’ve tried are almost useless to get the timings right.

Does anyone have a suggestion for freeware or a website that will get subs on this clip with good control of the font and the timings?

Youtube needs this kind of originality–truly, such innovation is a breath of fresh air. Cherish it. Cherish it.

(I’m interested in this question as well as I’d like to add subtitles to some of our home videos.)

Get yourself the free Subtitle Workshop, which opens the video inside the program itself, and allows you to type your own subtitles in time with the dialog.

Here is a screenshot that gives you some idea of how it works.

I’ve used it for a couple of things, and it worked great.

ETA: make sure you download the instruction manual from here.
