I would have asked this in GQ but it doesn’t really seem to have a definitive answer.
Okay, I translated the most popular page on my website into 5 languages (French, Italian German, Spanish and Portuguese). So, basically I have 6 versions of the same page. Is this a good idea? Do other websites do this?
Not being fluent in any of these languages, I use an online translator which is certainly not a very reliable resource.
So what do any of you folks do? Should a website be left as a 100% English language site and if someone wants to use it, leave it up to them to translate it?
Perhaps a link (or several links, one per language) to the translating tool saying “Translate this page here”
It is curteous of you to have several versions of your page, so that’s a good thing. And it saves people having to translate it every time. Just IMO, better you do it once than they do it countless times (depending on the popularity of your website)
Some websites don’t even bother to acknowledge the existence of other countries, let alone non english speaking ones.
