Oppa Gangnam Style - awesome Korean music video

I’m sadly unimpressed. A lot of the video is derivative of the old one, what’s new is unimpressive, the song’s not catchy, and there’s no distinctive dance.

Meh :frowning:

Indeed, Psy’s new song and video are sadly underwhelming.

Honestly, it was inevitable. There’s just absolutely nothing he could release that we would think is as good as Gangnam Style. Better to let it be a real dud so that the next one looks better in comparison.

By the way, here’s the video.

Actually, I didn’t like Gangnam Style the first time I heard it either, but it grew on me. This video might be the same.

Huh. For me, Gangnam Style just had that wave of “wtf?” moments - so random that even when you’ve seen it before you’re still trying to figure out what the hell’s going on, like a Boxxy vid set to music.

Isn’t this over yet?

Actually, it was kind of a cool video. I expected only a one or two week fascination though. I’m pretty impressed with the longevity of the video and Psy’s ability to cash in on it.

And I realize the thread is moving on, just wanted to do the ‘over yet’ thing one more time. Maybe somebody should make a video with a song called “Isn’t this over yet?”

Somebody like Justin Bieber.

Shodan

The new video is worth it just for the coda at the end where Psy yoinks a copy machine with his own head. I have to try that someday

Subtitled translation:

I’m finding the song pretty catchy, but I agree that the video is very derivative of Gangnam Style. I guess I can’t blame him, especially since a big selling point for Psy is his charisma. But not exactly original.

2 Billion views!
#2 is barely over a billion views for Justin Beiber’s Baby
#3 is at 711 million views for Charlie Bit My Finger!

2 billion is mind blowing, especially considering the gap to the competition.

so collectively, people have spent a total of more than 15 000 years watching the clip.

When they could be watching “Turn Down For What.”

A billion people watched Baby? That doesn’t bode well for… anything.

The original’s still a catchy tune. Just listened to it again.

I agree. I was just listening to it a few days ago on Pandora.

And an early shot in the video reminds me of this Murakami cover: Luxury fashion & independent designers | SSENSE

The thing is, I suspect Beiber’s audience watched his video a billion times, rather than a lot of discrete viewings; Gangnam Style seemed to have a broader audience, expanding beyond fans of Psy or even K-pop. For instance, I’m not a fan of either artist, but I’ve seen Gangnam Style for the novelty of it, while nothing’s tempted me to sit thru a Justin Beiber video.

Here’s CNN.com’s coverage of the song crossing the two billion mark: http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/01/showbiz/gangnam-youtube-record/index.html?hpt=hp_c3#

I’m proud to say I’m not one of them.
