There’s a massive display of Deep Eddy Orange vodka in front of me at this bar. Trying to think what you’d mix with it for a good cocktail. Vodka/Soda jumps to mind. I could also see it being mixed with cranberry and you’d get a cocktail similar to the Madras.
I’m mainly a wine drinker but when it comes to hard liquor, vodka is my main go-to. I’ll generally have it as a vodka martini, a Caesar, or with a “vodka ice” spritzer that is basically a lightly citrus flavoured carbonated vodka mix. The vodka ice thing is good in hot weather, where it competes with gin & tonic as the ideal beverage.
For those reasons, frankly I see little use for orange flavoured vodka. The only thing I can imagine doing with it is having it straight over ice. I mean, if you like screwdrivers, then vodka and fresh orange juice with an orange slice is a fine drink, but I’d use good quality plain vodka to make it, like Absolut. On occasion Absolut has included little samplers of flavoured vodkas with their full-size bottles, so I have samplers of lime, grapefruit, and apple vodkas (never saw the orange, though). I wouldn’t actually buy any of them, but as long as they’re free, I’ll occasionally pour one over ice, which is the same as I’d do with the orange vodka.
I’ve recently been getting the same way about Caesars. I used to really love them and especially enjoyed them on the spicy side, but in recent years the spice and acid has been getting a bit much.
Tonic, at least that’s what I’d use. Vodka Tonics are great and a bit of orange will work just fine.
I used to love drinking Pearl Persephone Pomegranate vodka with tonic.
That’s a weird one though… most drinks with orange either use orange juice, triple sec or orange curacao.
I imagine you could use it in a margarita in place of the triple sec, and add a bit more sugar/simple syrup to taste, but that’s just substituting it for triple sec.
I’d think anything you’d use lemon/citron vodka for could be done with orange vodka- like a lemon drop, just with orange vodka and orange juice.
Kind of an aside, but I recently found out that Angostura makes an orange bitters that goes well in a lot of beverages. It really perks up a martini, and I use it in scotch as well.
I shudder to think of what “root beer float” vodka might taste like.
I have never understood the whole point of flavored vodkas. Is it for taking shots?
Most other mixological uses are almost certainly better done using the real thing or a liqueur made from that- why use lime vodka if you can just use lime juice and regular vodka? Or use triple sec/curacao instead of orange vodka?
