I was listening to the 9 the other day when the acoustic version of “Ordinary World” came on, and it occured to me that there are songs out there with beautiful orchestration that lend themselves quite easily to interpretation by a chamber orchestra and no lyricist. Some more recent examples are Smashing Pumpkins “Tonight, Tonight” (famously used as the recessional during the Monica/Chandler wedding ep on Friends) and Coldplay’s “Clocks”. Of course, both these songs already had the ‘bones’ for this kind of thing, but I suppose the defining element for me is that it comes out sounding lovely and grandiose, not muzak-ey.
Any songs you think of with some orchestration built in (or not at all) that would lend themselves to this?
