Order of the Stick - Book 5 Discussion Thread

Not quite true. A Barbarian can become Lawful, but the change in mindset will get in the way of their Barbarian Rage. By contrast, a divine spellcaster whose alignment pisses off their god will lose their god-given magical abilities, while a Monk who becomes non-Lawful lacks the mindset to continue their training, but doesn’t lose any of what they already had.

How’s that work? Wouldn’t Durkon have to be either chaotic or neutral to worship Thor? I thought you couldn’t be more than one alignment position removed from your chosen deity.

I was posting a response to this when the board went down.

Anyway, I said that I don’t think it is a zombie. If you compare it to the zombie in this strip, you can see the zombie has a lot more wear and tear. Plus most zombies have distinctive grey circles around their eyes.

Hmph, maybe you’re right. I took the olive-ish green color of that bird as an undead color, but maybe this pterodactyl has a bit of chlorophyll in its lineage. I guess I’d ask how they whomped up a normal pterodactyl, but if Tarquin has an Allosaurus on tap he obviously has a Jurassic stable (and aviary) available.

On that point I’ll defer to your superior knowledge of game mechanics. (I haven’t role-played for over 10 years, and D&D was never my favorite system anyway.)

But as for your other points …

not friends? See:

When were they ever in opposition, except over rescuing Elan from the bandits?

cite?

  1. she’s specifically identified as a succubus, which I am told is usually chaotic.

  2. She’s an incarnation of ILLICIT sex

I have to say that these flashback links are quite entertaining.
I really must take the time to reread this entire work.

But, there is this ‘life’ thing that keeps getting in the way.
<sigh>

Never get interested in Sluggy Freelance. Oh, wait…that’s unlikely to happen now (or anytime since about the beginning of Oceans Unmoving).

Sad but true, although the recent appearance of, or reference to, pretty much every major character from the entire series hints at the start of the final ginormous storyline.

Of course, every time I think that he introduces yet more characters so I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

OOTS Thor is not confirmed to be Chaotic. OOTS isn’t using the stock D&D pantheon, so Thor may be Neutral Good or even Lawful in OOTS.

That is why I sprang for the complete series of dead wood strips in the Kickstarter. I can sit and read them at my leisure without being dependent on a computer nearby.

They contracted Harry Dresden?

So looking forward to mine arriving…

Thor gets drunk and throws lightning bolts around. Sounds pretty chaotic to me.

Sometimes, Google just doesn’t do it.
When I tried for ‘thor alignment’, I got three posts from here and about 20 from “Thor’s Alignment and Brakes.”

That was amusing as heck to me.

Further ‘research’ (if that word can apply to adding the term ‘d&d’ to ‘thor alignment’ for a Google search) shows that according to D&D 3.5, Thor is Chaotic Good. Not that this applies to the Stickverse. I merely had a few moments to fill waiting for the machines to complete their tasks.

Is that the guy from Adventures in Babysitting?

And somewhere on the GiantITP site, Rich confirms that he’s not using the stock D&D material for his pantheons, and says that the proximate inspiration for his version of Thor was the Marvel Comics one.

Wait. You’re saying Thor is breaking his alignment?

Does Captain America know about this?

That makes a lot of sense. The Marvel version is quite lawful, especially since his evil brother Loki is very chaotic.

Wiki says Thor was, among other things in his portfolio, the protector of mankind, a god of strength, hallowing (to make holy or blessed), fertility, healing. Those aspects of the god must appeal to Durkon. Just not the drinking and the wenching.

The only problem with this is the use of the word ‘was’.
There are some Asatru out there who would prefer the word ‘is’.
