Order of the Stick - Book 5 Discussion Thread

If so, you’re not alone.

Watchoo talkin bout, kaylasdad?

From above:

(Bolding mine)

I don’t see Durkon there, so I don’t think Durkon getting Vamped was an illusion.

(Was that ever in question? I thought it was…)

No, Durkon is definitely dead. The spell here doesn’t extend any further back than comic 885, which is the first time we see the runes.

Thanks, chorpler.

Yeah, Belkar still has the bite marks in the last panel so…

I wonder if we’ll get 4 strips, each based on Haley, Belkar, Elan and Mr Scruffy’s fantasy Big Bad?

Elan: defeats Tarquin
Haley:
Belkar:
Scruffy:

Not sure about the last 3. Suggestions/scenarios? I think Haley and Belkar’s would be the same scenario, but they were the key to defeating Xykon/RC rather than Roy. For Scruffy, I’ve got nothing.

I doubt Burlew will show all four illusions - the point’s been made just by showing one.

If he did, I don’t think Elan’s would be him defeating Xykon. His fantasy would be Roy defeating Xykon with Elan being helpful. I’m not sure about Haley’s but it would probably be similar to Roy’s except with more treasure at the end. And Belkar’s would end up with everyone murdered except for Mr Scruffy.

Full marks for chorpler!

Or “Tarquin shows up, admits he was wrong and joins the side of good.”

My prediction - he will show everyone’s fantasy, but only a couple of panels each, not a whole strip.

Elan wants to be best buds with Roy, or even have Roy as an adopted brother. Haley wants her dad to be safe and she wants to have more money than she can imagine (and she can imagine quite a lot). Belkar would enjoy not just everyone (except Mr. Scruffy) getting murdered, but everyone (again, except Mr. S) getting murdered by Belkar.

Maybe this trap is really a test. It shows what each persons true goal is so that the gates guards can see if they’re to be trusted.

If so, Belkar probably just ruined it for everyone.

Also, why does Redcloak being stuck in a forcecage negate his spellcasting abilities?

Because it’s Roy’s imagination and therefore dependent on his knowledge of spell interactions?

The spell description says nothing about that, actually. I just looked it up when I read your post. It’s not unreasonable to assume the effect, though. Using the windowless cell variation, there’s no way to attack the prisoner of a forcecage from outside (the barred cage variation you CAN attack, as long as the weapon will fit between the force bars, although the prisoner receives cover from the cage). You can attack the cage itself, with both spells and weapons.

Looking around some more, it seems to be a generally accepted fact that the walls of a forcecage prevent ANY interaction between inside and outside, including spells, weapons and possibly even sound (except for the barred cage version).

Well, it’s supposed to be a cube made out of Walls of Force, and Wall of Force prevents casting through it, so that sounds like a pretty reasonable interpretation of the spell, if not 100% RAW.
That being said, if we go further in “it’s just a specialty WoF” interpretation, then Xykon could free Redcloak with a simple Disintegrate (quickened or otherwise).

Line of effect: if you have no line of effect to the target or area of your spell, you cannot cast it. Some few conjuration and divination spells (e.g., teleport, scry) are exceptions to this rule, but otherwise it’s a pretty powerful thing.

There are things Redcloak could in theory do, especially something like summoning a demon with teleport self to join in the fight, but mostly he’d be hosed by this tactic.

Or a Superb Disp fizzle!

When Roy first recruited V, he showed a pretty comprehensive understanding of how a fireball works. Force Cage is a much higher level spell, but I wouldn’t take it for granted that Roy is ignorant about how any given spell works. He did spend a lot of time in the library back at fighter college.
