I think the last dialog on the page–“Yup, definitely just my dream” “Meow?” was intended to communicate that Belkar and Mr. Scruffy shared that dream.
I think it might even be another instance where Mr Scruffy is “doing it backwards”, influencing the ranger rather than the reverse. Mr Scruffy wasn’t in Belkar’s dream, Belkar was in the cat’s dream.
Slim Whitman?
Slim Whitman!
Are you mad, sir?
(Actually, he was pretty dang iconic for his time… but still… Slim Whitman?)
Best darn anti-Martian secret weapon we’ve got!
Okay, I’m old too, but I heard Woody Guthrie.
Et tu, Prof?
OK, ok… I’ll admit it.
I thought John Denver because my SO and I listened to an old CD of his in the car a couple of days ago.
So that’s why he doesn’t fund his IRA.
Only because Cacofonix isn’t actually a country singer ![]()
Now, you are just messing with me.

Belkar can’t catch a shred of respect, can he?
Remember this strip when we get to the end of the last book.
So… was that the happy ending Elan was promised by the Oracle?
I don’t know, I thought Roy was being somewhat respectful of him there. He’s trying to avoid hurting Belkar’s feelings by not telling him that he got ganked in the first round. It might not sound respectful to Belkar, but the whole truth would sound even worse.
We don’t know. We can’t know. We can only hope or dread, until the very end. Well done, yes?
Love the philosophy espoused by Elan in the 3rd panel.
Is this the first time that Roy has ever apologized to Elan for anything?
He tried to, here.
I don’t think that’s what you meant to link to.
Whoops! Fixed now.
There’s a post on the GitP: link
