At the end of book 4, Durkon was shown researching a new spell, which is not something he would’ve done before. So that’s a little bit of growth. It’s true, though, that he’s the most static character of the group.
My favorite Durkon therory, from the OOTS forum, is that he’ll come home as a zombie, thus fulfilling two prophecies with one stone.
Yes, but he was doing it after Roy suggested it. Durkon is a follower not a leader. And this is not just my opinion as a reader; Rich Burlew has said this also.
There’s this scene, where a letter inviting him back (and mentioning that the original reason for sending him is forgotten) is destroyed. But I don’t think any more details on why he was sent are given out of On the Origin of the PC’s.

I’m leaning in that direction. It’s either a lizard man or a troglodyte, and I think we’ve seen troglodytes in the strip before and they don’t look like that. If this were based on Dragonlance, it could be a draconian, but it’s not.

Someone on another forum suggested that it is a Greenspawn Sneak, a Spawn of Tiamat. Which would make this about Familiacide.

I dunno. The fact that Elan is apparently a designated target makes me think this might be a Nale plan.
My guess is they are a new faction. And since they entered seeming evil, they are probably working for the good guys protecting something.

Well, Elan was botching Gather Information checks in the local tavern. I don’t think we’ve seen what V was up to.
When she meets with Elan, she mentioned checking with the local wizard’s guild, which was less than impressive.
