The cleric of Fenrir had yellow eyes in the vote strip because he was possessed by his god to make the vote, and all northern clerics possessed by their gods have yellow eyes. Whatever his species is (I’m guessing gnoll), it appears that red is just his normal eye color.
He might be something like a Mongrelman.
Plus, attacking the high priest of an evil deity who is likely in your corner anyway (evil, pro-chaos and destruction) seems to be a lot of risk for no reward.
I notice that Durkoff’s beard is now shorter in the artwork, thanks to Roy. If Durkoff heals (harms) himself, will the beard get restored?
OTOH, it is weird that the spell had to be researched to begin with. Since it’s divine magic, the researching part should have taken about 10 seconds : “hey Nergal, can you do this for me, pretty please with a cherry on top ? Cool, praise you.”
But Durkula seems to have Durkon’s spells, and Durkon appears to be aware of everything happening on the outside. What to say, what to do, the muscle memory, it would all be there. All he’d need is the raw power, which it appears that any god can provide.
Not that I understand why Durkon would want to know Protection from Daylight. Does it have a secondary effect, perhaps one that can be used against enemies?
Does he? Serious question - I haven’t followed that closely. Has Durkula cast any spells that could reasonably be expected to be on a Thor Cleric’s spell list but not a Hel Cleric’s spell list?
They’d largely be identical, after all.
All his Cure <level> Wounds have been turned into Inflict <level> Wounds due to his using negative instead of positive energy. In theory he should only be able to cast from his selected domains, but that’ only for his ‘extra’ spell of the day.
FWIW, I don’t see any real reason for (live) Durkon to want to cast Protection from Daylight, I was just randomly wondering if he still could despite the vampire spirit being the one to memorize it. Or, like I said, could the vampire cast Mass Death Ward, a fairly unique spell researched by Durkon and not a stock part of any deity’s portfolio.
We know from their sojourn in the desert that Durkon can cast a protection from the elements spell, specifically Endure Heat. That spell clearly does more than the name suggests, because only Belkar is getting sunburnt. So the Protection from Daylight spell is probably just a variant that blocks whatever mystical component of sunlight that vampires are allergic to. Most vampire mythologies have sort of assumed that it’s a UV component, which means that the existing Endure Heat should have already probably done the job.
Nitpick: Alive or undead, he could cast both Cure Wounds and Inflict Wounds. The difference is that a good cleric can spontaneously cast Cure Wounds, using a spell slot which had some other spell prepared in it (and likewise, an evil cleric can spontaneously cast Inflict). To cast the other spell, you have to actually prepare it in advance.
No, that would require Regenerate. ![]()

Red Means Stop!
If only Roy had some ranged weapons. Or at least a good polearm. Damn you, Jiminy!
The spear of the High Priest of Odin is still sticking in a nearby wall.
Maybe an undead Belkar can sneak inside…
Yeah, Durkula’s phrasing was too precise.
Yup, even an emphasis on “alive.”
We’re definitely into “Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!” territory here.
This is probably where Belkar comes in.
Keep in mind that Durkula could screw it up in another way. If he moves in a way that would not allow Roy to avoid the shell, the spell expires. So if he had Roy backed against a wall and kept advancing, POP!. I don’t know if it allows him to push Roy aside or if he has to go around Roy to keep the spell up.
