Order of the Stick - Book 6 Discussion Thread

Doesn’t Roy have a Belt of Giant’s Strength?

Also: Boo-yah! Elan, stepping up!

I posted the following back in January, when 1062 was the most recent strip.

Well, I was right, except for where the swoop ended up. I was thinking it would be to the poop deck.

Well, I guess he had to make a convenient rope. But that’s what Dashing Swordsmen can do, it’s one of their feats, I’m sure.

Frost Giant.

I like the way that Elan didn’t try to fight the Frost Giant himself. The old Elan would have taken the most obvious course of action and jumped into the middle of the fight. The new Elan figured out that he would contribute more by healing Roy and getting him back into the fight.

I think this is an ongoing development from Elan’s confrontation with his father; Elan’s being an effective support rather than an ineffective protagonist. Tarquin tried use his narrative powers to twist the story to his own ends; he placed himself above the story. Elan’s using his narrative powers to help the story move towards the proper ending even though it means he won’t be the hero of the story.

Isn’t that what he’s always done? Leave the actual fighting to the fighters, and use bard magic to boost them.

His new technique is certainly more effective than just singing “Fight, fight, fight the frost giant…”

Worrisome.

Not only has it been almost a month now since the last installment, clicking on their forum over there gives me an error:

“You have reached an invalid page at Giant In the Playground. Please check your url or use the links at the left to browse the site.”

Anyone know what is going on? Is this the end of the strip?

It wouldn’t be the first time a forum crashed.

I visited one of their D&D sub-forums yesterday, and it was working fine. Give it some time.

He has undisclosed medical problems too.

He was posting on twitter a week ago. Looks like he’s been busy trying to catch up on Kickstarter rewards. Not sure why the forums gone though, hopefully just a website glitch.

Hey. So obviously I’ve been out of touch for a bit. Back now, trying to get on top of things that slid.

I need to finish off O-Chul story for the Kickstarter backers, which I need a few more days…this week? Maybe?..and then a regular comic.

Once O-Chul’s done I’ll be able to focus on the main strip again for a bit.

Thanks to everyone who’s sent their support during all of this.

The sycophants at GitP make me sick. The truth of the matter is that Burlew took a $1 million payout with the implication it would get him to do some serious work on the comic, (with the backer rewards being just gravy), and has spent the last 5 years being a lazy hack, (minus the few months or so when he hurt his thumb).

Damn straight. If I were you, I’d refuse to read his webcomic anymore.

Also, what’s up with that George R. R. Martin guy?

Actually, the Kickstarter was intended to cover the costs of reprinting one of the comic collection books. When it reached past the initial 20k (I think) that was needed, he pledged to reprint all the other comics and use a big chunk to modernize the website and forum servers. I don’t think he ever mentioned that he would use the money to cover his living expenses so he could work on the comic full-time (I could be wrong though).

I do think he promised more than he could deliver in his enthusiasm of his unimaginable Kickstarter success, but I also think he works hard to deliver as much as he can. It sucks that the regular comic suffers from this, but I think it is fair to expect him to deliver on the things he’s been paid for, than on a free wen comic.

That’s something of a moot point at the moment.

Notification now says that forums will be back up in a few days. Was unexpected but maybe they had a nasty crash or machine failure.

You should ask for the money you pay to read the comic every month back.

I can’t complain about the kickstarter. I paid the price of three books (a little less, actually), and got three books. Plus a magnet, a pad of notepaper, some digital downloads, and a couple other knickknacks. Nobody’s ripped me off. Has he ripped you off?

Hey, when I pledged to Burlew’s Kickstarter campaign it was based on the implied promise that he would publish and post a free webcomic. So you can imagine my disappointment with the fact that he’s been publishing and posting a free webcomic since he got my money.

I feel pretty much the same way, but he did post an update back in February that he would update again on April 24, which he has blown pretty terribly. Even if he just posted “I’m working real hard to get the O-Chul PDF done and I’ll follow up again in 2 weeks if I’m not done” would have been nice. But I feel like I already got my money’s worth, even if I’d prefer some better communication.

Will you guys stop with the idea that you can’t be upset at a producer because they release their content for free? It’s a dumb argument.

I too don’t like the schedule. I get why webcomic authors print books, as it gets them more money. But, if it takes away from timely comics, I’d prefer them not to do it. No other webcomic I read is as bad as this one. The story doesn’t suffer, and the art is often better.

For me, he’s made exactly $2 off of me, both for the extra comics he made. He might have made $12 if he’d not canceled the digital version of the calendars when I needed them. I definitely put him at the bottom of the list of supporting in any other way, though.

Granted, I’ve been on record of wishing that complaints about the creator be separate from comic threads, but whatchagonnado?
