Order of the Stick - Book 6 Discussion Thread

I did and I enjoyed them all as well!

Damn, poor Minrah. She actually got a last name mention, which would normally increase her survival chances, but only after she was dead (by only 20 seconds or so even). :smack:

That would have been my guess. I mean, what secret would you not want another dwarf to hear (the tree thing is all dwarfs, right, not just Durkon?)

Not just a last name, but even a middle name!

Even with a middle name she’s still out of her depth.

I like the character. She had the stones to throw herself into it when she was outclassed. However, even if she gets rezzed - a God is RIGHT there, after all - she’s still so totally outgunned that if she joins up she’ll be good for a single round distraction of Xykon or Redcloak.

Still, maybe she’ll play some pivotal role. Merry was outgunned against the Witch King and that played out well through some luck.

Or Sigdi Thundershield, for that matter. If a worshipper of Thor can put that kind of sentiment out there without thinking twice, I’m gonna guess that the domain slot of Minrah’s sexuality is not the issue being referenced here.

She’s already stated that she’s not interested in being raised. Now, maybe she’d change her mind if Thor Himself asked her personally… but he’s not going to ask her personally. Thor’s there to talk to Durkon, not to Minrah, and he’s only saying anything at all to her out of politeness.

There’s a comic with Thor arguing with Hel that a dwarf who died from infection from a splinter actually died an honorable death in combat against trees. And the Durkon flashbacks had him and another dwarf kid plating some “Smite the Tree” game.

I’d look up strips but honestly feel like the “tree” thing should have been a one-strip joke that died an honorable death itself.

Could someone remind me when Nale “had a problem with homosexuality”? Not that I’m doubting you, just genuinely don’t remember.

Where does she say that?

He seemed upset that somebody else would think he was gay.

Seriously? It was just one strip ago.

She doesn’t say so directly, but she expresses extreme surprise that Durkon would be willing to accept a raise.

Must… resist… urge to assert… heterosexuality! For the sake… of the plan!

Not so much a problem with homosexuals but once Sabine implies that her shape-shifting sex romps with Nale aren’t purely Male/Female and Nale seems flustered and doesn’t want her to mention it.

Here we go. I thought it was Nale/Sabine talking to the (more full) Order of the Stick about something but guess I mis-remembered a little.

Edit: Don’t ask me how I missed Chronos beating me by 30+ minutes

I think it’s more an issue of male fragility, which is something you’d expect from Nale.

Also, sometimes a joke is just a joke. Remember, this is still a comedy strip. Note everything is about plot or world-building - sometimes it’s just there because it’s funny.

The various mentions of homosexuality/ bisexuality/ transgender indicate that many are okay with it, but some people have a problem.

Elan also experimented, but is upset by the thought of a male hitting on him.

Haley kept it a secret that she kissed a girl once … okay more than once.

The Cliffport cop/ prison guard mentioned “coming out” which means that he was in the closet to begin with.

Roy objected to changing gender even temporarily.

V refuses to discuss his or her gender and orientation.

The tree thing played an important role in the forest bandit arc. And then again in the Cliffport battle.

All of these are examples of somebody discussing their own sexual orientation. Has there ever been an example in the strip of anyone disparaging somebody else for being gay?

Offhand, I can’t recall it happening. But the fact that some people feel the need to keep it a secret is a good indicator that it does happen.
