Order of the Stick - Book 6 Discussion Thread

I was going to say “ah, so Durkon wants to know where the pilgrims are going exactly, secret holy site then ?” ; but Hel would know about something like that, wouldn’t she ? I should think you get to become a god without getting humongous scrying powers somewhere along the way…

I get the impression HPOH already knows the destination, but he’s trying to find a justification for going there.

It could be that having no earthly followers puts you at a disadvantage in that regard. Her entire domain is the underworld so perhaps her ability to watch the world of the living is more limited.

He knows what, I think, but not where. Hence him wanting to follow the pilgrims. Otherwise he could have just told Roy “I know exactly where they’re heading, let’s go!” when Roy said they didn’t have time to search a 2,000 mile mountain range.

You mean, he wants to unleash Hel?

Is it just me or is the Durkpire slipping out of his accent as he gets more excited. Check out his argument just before and just after Roy says no. There is no indication in the speech bubble of any accent at all. Has Roy figured it out? Is that why he is saying no?

It’s not just you. I’m sure it’s deliberately done by the author.

I don’t think so. Roy has been fooled, and not for the first time. He’s saying no because they can’t spare the time.

Do not poke the vampire.

A note from the Giant himself:

Thanks for the info Gyrate. I could tell by how they were presented these weren’t going to be one-off characters like the temple druids had been.

A small note but I like the sign: “Human-sized rooms at normal-sized prices”. Once again, Burlew makes the point that NPC’s have their own lives and aren’t just props to the player characters. Gnomes wouldn’t think of themselves as being short. They’d consider gnome-sized to be the norm and would regard humans as being bigger than normal.

The priestess likes dumplings, eh? You know what goes with dumplings? Stew. And who do we know who likes stew? The MitD. This might be a clue. And a conclave of priests might mean that the MitD is indeed Zeus.

NEW STRIP 987

I know vampires are arrogant, but Hel’s undead minion is really out there. I don’t know what their goal is, but it seems unimaginably risky to put him among so many high-level clerics. Should be interesting.

Yeah, there’s going to be enough Turning power (not to mention Rebuking/Commanding power, and wouldn’t THAT be embarrassing?) to make that a really tricky moment if any of those clerics twig to what’s really going on.

There’ll probably be some “I’m a vampire but I’m also Hel’s cleric and the Godsmoot Treaty Accords of the 12th Year of the Snarl prohibit clerics from attacking another cleric during…” blah blah blah.

He’s not going to wandering into a pile of clerics with the Turn Undeads and Maces of Disruption (are those still a thing?) without knowing he can’t be hurt. And Hel wouldn’t send her one minion without assurances of his survival.

I like Veldrina, but I wondered about her wisdom score. It turns out Favored Souls are more reliant on charisma. Ah.

From what Durkula said, I might infer that all vampires in Ootsland have a dual soul arrangement. It’s sort of ironic that vampires have a greater risk of a final ending than their occupant, who could be resurrected or reincarnated if an adversary gets stakey. Rich’s treatment really puts the horror back into the vampire template. Ditto for golems.

Could the Durkula showdown really be only a couple of days away in-comic? Or even the next day?

It would be a surprise to us readers if Burlew kills off Durkon and he returns home posthumously in the traditional sense, making this whole vampire thing just a red herring.

No, RB has said that the Durkula plot will go on a while.

Heh. Love the last panel.

Yeah, Favoured Soul is basically the Sorcerer of Clerics. And the…hmm, what was it, Spirit Shaman ? Something like that. Sorcerer of Druids.
Very crappy one, too - who needs a Druid who can’t wildshape and has no animal companion ? Druid spells are shitty for a reason !
