Order of the Stick book 7 discussion thread

Xykon has always been a lot smarter and more cunning than he appears. It’s part of what makes him so dangerous.

Well, “always” except for the Order’s assault on Durokan’s Gate.

What Xykon thinks he is, and what he actually is, might not be the same thing.

Sure, and I’m interested any guesses for the former with my question.

Xykon presented it as a rumor, and there was a hoax some years back about a a hippo eating a dwarf. But since I very much doubt that MitD is a hippo, I don’t think this guess leads anywhere.

Ok, this is indirect: a creature similar to a hagunemnon had an appearance in Red Dwarf. Apparently this episode is beloved by fans.

The MitD thread over at the Oots forum is pretty well organized now. Scroll down to the 3rd post to see major contenders, frequently proposed ideas, and probably ruled out ideas. Spoilers, obviously.

Dwarf stars are obviously a delicacy to the always-hungry black hole. Xykon just remembered it slightly wrong.

This has to be the longest conversation MitD has ever had without some silly misunderstanding/goofy remark from him.

I read that thread, or at least part of it, years ago. I found it hilarious. My favorite bit was when they spent 10 pages arguing over a comment Rich made, about how the MitD is “as famous as Thor”. Gee, what could be as famous as a (Norse) deity associated with (thunder and) lightning?

Thanks for that link. I had forgotten that people were disgusted by the monster in the dark when they saw it. Hmmm.

I’m still going with Godzilla, or some kin of his. Remember, Rich said that the creature was known, but he never said that he was known from D&D sourcebooks. In fact, he’s probably not from a D&D sourcebook, because the comic is meant to be accessible to people unfamiliar with the game.

1261 Certain Doom

So any ideas what spell Recloak cast during the conversation? I think it may have been some divination to help him decide which of the two options he was stating at the moment was more accurate. Especially since there was “magic” emanating from his eye, maybe to show it was a “Seeing” spell.

Maybe he was dismissing a spell, not casting one.

“The art style fits the story he’s telling!”

He’s probably dismissing True Seeing. Note that his eye changes colour.

Yeah, that looks more likely.

I like that Redcloak doesn’t even consider that MITD could be a traitor - no reason for him to, of course (especially since he refers to it as “that moron”), but will be interesting when it is eventually revealed.

If he’s dismissing a spell, why? He’s already spent the spell slot and components; why not just let it continue for its full duration, just in case?

If it comes to it, why would anybody ever dismiss any spell instead of letting it run its full duration?

Maybe True Seeing is annoying to walk around with. Maybe it’s extra annoying when you’re missing an eye and, I dunno, accidentally focusing into the Ethereal Plane all the time or something. I do agree that his eye goes from red to its normal yellow, suggesting that he’s dismissing the spell effect.

At least, he doesn’t consider it out loud. He knows that Oona and Monster-San get along well, so if Monster-San is a traitor, then Oona might be, too. And when dealing with a potential traitor, it’s wise to not let on that you suspect them.

Or, yeah, maybe he doesn’t suspect.
