Oregon, Summer '74: Help Me FInd This Song!

Alright, you Dopers from the There’s-Portland-Then-There’s-Everyone-Else state: A little more info.

I was in Oregon for the summer of 1974 and this song was all over the radio in Ashland. I think it was a local song. Here are the lyrics as I remember them, with question marks where I’m not sure.

Go on and be that way if you want,
Go on and be that way if you want.
Well, you’re like me in so many ways:
You can’t if you can and you go if you stay.

??? if tomorrow rains or shines:
??? what I lose or you might find.
??? I get so brainwashed every time you’re near,
???, ???, yeah, yeah.

I have racked my brain, I have emailed radio stations, I have asked the people I was staying with, and no one seems to know. Forty years later, I’m still kicking myself for not buying the record. So help me if you can!!
PS: Mods please move if this is not the right category.

I also grew up in Oregon in that era. I listened to KISN radio out of Portland clear across the state. I do not recall that song. I am guessing that it was a local artist.

Ashland is very near the California border. What stations did you listen to? Were they from the Bay area or maybe Shasta City? Or did the mountains around Ashland block almost all of the radio stations?

You heard it on the radio. Try asking one of the local radio stations if anyone could remember this song & its artist. Some stations have a record of what songs they played when. IF these records still exist, you may find it that way. Heck, it may even be as local as the college’s station. Good luck!

Huh… right away when I heard the 70’s and Oregon, I thought of Pilot and Quarterflash… but “Harden My Heart” didn’t come out until 1980. Probably not the same guys…

OK, Los Stellarians sang a cover of “Be That Way” on their album Cholo Soul. Singer Doug “SA” Martinez (also of the band 311) had this to say about the album:
This first album we’re doing is an eight song record of cover songs from really obscure, unknown artists, and obviously obscure and unknown songs!
So, it’s an obscure song, but who is he covering?

Well, that took longer than I wanted. It’s by Jimmy Gray Hall. See here.

Snowboarder, YOU FUCKING ROCK!!!

PS: I can’t tell you the pleasure of hearing a song I remember loving, and, 40 years later, finding it’s even better than I remember. Seriously, guys, THANKS… You made my day.

psieker did all the heavy lifting; I just pointed at it once we knew what to point at. Still, happy to help.
