Origin of Bill Bailey's "Ood"

In ‘Dandelion Mind’ Bill Bailey has a running gag with a lute called “Ood”. In this special, it seems like a bit made up on the spot, but the speed with which the audience picked up on it (and a couple other tidbits) tells me it’s a classic bit for him.

So, how/when did this bit start, and what’s the story behind it?

Not familiar with the routine, but he might be referencing the Ood from Doctor Who.

An oud is a real lute Oud - Wikipedia

But I’m guessing that’s not the answer you’re after.

I can in to say the oud, or 'ud, like ZipperJJ.

Sounds like “Oud” might be the ultimate origin. Though I’m hoping somebody can tell if he used the bit in an earlier tour/show or if it’s new to this one.

So did I. The oud is a real type of lute. I see people play them in the subways around here sometimes.

It’s a real instrument AND an inherently funny word. Perfect fit for Bill Bailey.
