Orphan Black season 2 discussion thread

I never would have guessed (thanks!)

Here’s additional information (an article in Wired) –

In case you can’t wait until tomorrow, a sneak preview of the first minute or so of the next episode is available (no spoilers at link, except for the embedded video you have to click to play).

This show continues to deliver… even though it wasn’t a surprise to us, the image of Helena showing up in her wedding dress, drenched in blood, was pretty awesome.

Over on The AV Club, a bunch of the commenters seem to be saying that Rachel was banging Paul. Was that stated/implied at some point that I missed? I thought that the men’s clothes Sarah found were Daniel’s…

I did wonder if they were both monitors, they would make a good team, watching when the other couldn’t.

Also Alison is so guilty about Ainsley that it would be a twist that ‘hey she was a monitor after all’.

That was my take to. I was actually expecting Rachel and Paul would be doing it, so I was watching for hints that was the case. I’m pretty sure there weren’t any. Certainly Sarah thought Daniel was Rachel’s boy-toy, and Daniel didn’t correct her.

Good episode. Blood covered Helena in a wedding dress was pretty cool, good to see that she’s getting back to doing what she does best, murdering people with maximum creepiness. But they really need to answer at least a few questions about the clones instead of piling on more mysteries. The plot is starting to feel a bit like a hamster wheel.

In a show that does a pretty good job of having people who are party to shocking events actually act shocked (Sarah after the car crash, for example), Kira’s Dad is weirdly able to role with the punches. Not sure if that’s a plot point or just bad acting.

If I’m not mistaken, Art has the photo because of the Prolethians who murdered the diner owner a couple episodes ago - the one who died in the diner was wearing a large and prominent belt buckle with the Prolethian symbol of the fish on it. Art did a Google search on images of the symbol and found out about the religious cult.

Yes! Loved the episode for that. Helena’s too good a crazy evil character to just kill off.

I noticed that too. It makes me think he’s involved somehow and knows Sarah’s a clone - possibly a former monitor who wants to cash in? Possibly someone who knew about the project and was disgusted, so wants to help Sarah? Unclear at the moment.

Either he knows more than he claims to or he’s a complete dumbass. Walking away from your home with a dead cop on the lawn is little different than throwing your life away.

Before I was taking it for granted that Sarah was unknown to the Dyad institute before the events of the show (being a post-implantation twin of Helena meant that if they knew about Helena they’d think their count was complete and stop looking for another one). But all of the other monitors were boyfriend/partner/spouse of their clones – maybe Sarah was known to the Dyads and Cal was Sarah’s monitor before she ran away.

I’m pretty sure Leeky and Rebecca have said they didn’t know where Sarah was for most of her life. And Cal seems to have been a fairly brief fling/mark (Felix didn’t know about him, despite apparently being familiar with several other “Kira’s dad candidates”), so he doesn’t really seem like monitor material in any case.

Didn’t I see something where Cal was holding a cell phone that said “I’m returning with Sarah?” That made me think he was a monitor but now that I think of it, I wasn’t watching very closely- was it the cell phone of the other guy that tried to snatch Sarah?

Yes. Sarah picked it up from the crashed car. She was trying to make it seem to Rachel like everything was going as planned so she wouldn’t send more people after her.

I have a problem with the whole monitor system - it seems to me that if you wanted close monitoring of your clones, romantic partners would not be the way to go - you waste human resources because once a pass is rejected, you’re unlikely to be able to use that same person again, and even if the initial establishment of a romantic relationship is successful, you’re never quite sure how long it will last.

I suppose the show has to do it that way since Dyad seems committed to regular surreptitious visits by doctors and blood samples.

But I would do it by having the clones early on “diagnosed” with some ailment that is incurable, but requires regular treatment. That way the clones bring themselves in for regular blood samples and doctor’s visits - maybe paid for by some mysterious medical grant so there’s no economic incentive to go to a different doctor, or one who hasn’t been recommended by the grant funders. Then you don’t have to administer sedatives and sneak a whole phlebotomy crew into the house.

Of course, my plan makes for TV that isn’t nearly as interesting.

Oh good, I was very disappointed if Cal was a monitor. Will teach me to pay better attention :smack:

I have a theory that Donnie wasn’t a “planned” monitor. He got into the long-term relationship with Alison and the Dyads decided to recruit him instead of trying to break it up and redirect Alison towards one of their people. That’s why he’s so incompetent at the job.

I think this is exactly right. Allison mentions early on that they’ve known each other since high school.

So did I miss the part where the resolved the “Felix’s handprints are on the gun and he’s going to jail” issue, or is that still ongoing.

Hey folks! wifey and I just got hooked on the show and our binge watch has caught up the present. Sad because we have to wait for the next ep, but happy because now I get to read about/discuss the show online w/o fear of spoilers. Huzzah!

So get the preliminaries out of the way: amazing show, Tatiana is astounding, the writing is top-notch, Olivier’s tail was disturbing, I love how much tension is in almost every episode, Paul is a dick, yadda-yadda…

It does feel like a bit of a cheat for Helena to be back, but it’s worth it. Her scenes this season have been stellar. That scene of her coming around the corner in the bloody wedding dress while Sara is tied up… ooh, super-creepy. Love it. Might have had a bit more impact if we hadn’t seen her yet that season, but then all the stuff with the Proletheans would have had to be done in flashback or something, so maybe I’m wrong.

Wife and I agree that Cal can’t be in on it. But then I didn’t think Mrs. S was in on it either, so who knows? One thing that worries me is that he had a different name on the license he showed that cop. So either he was prepared with a fake ID, or something shady is going on. I really hope it’s just the former. He really does seem to care about Kira, so here’s hoping he’s one of the good guys.

My suspicions:

  • OF COURSE Prof. Duncan is still alive. I bet his wife is too. And I’m betting Rachel even knew this.
  • I think the original donor for the clones had this lung disease, the clones were created to try to cure the disease and/or get healthy lungs for a transplant for her. The original was probably the Duncans’ natural daughter. It’s possible that Rachel is this original, OR the original died and they adopted Rachel to “replace” her (creepy).
  • Donnie wasn’t always a monitor, but was recruited more recently, probably by telling him that Allison was in danger and only he could protect her. I think he really does love her or at least did once.
  • I don’t know what the hell is up with Mrs. S, but I don’t see her as a Neolutionist OR a Prolethean. I feel like she’s in some 3rd faction.
  • If Felix is a clone too, they’ll wait another season or two to pull that one out.

As of the end of the episode, I think he’s still in custody. Sarah told Leekie at the bar (I think it was that scene) that he needed to fix things with Felix. I expect next episode he will be out, but we won’t actually see the resolution.

I disagree about it being a “cheat” because I think the fact that she can heal the way she did is going to be a real plot point. Even the doctors were noting how she shouldn’t be healing that way. In the long run, I think it’s going to turn out to be something that will help Cosima (and any other sick clones) to heal from their respiratory illness.

I’m sure he’s alive, but I think his wife is dead. Either he started to doubt the project and set the fire in the lab to try to stop the project, OR his wife started to doubt and he set the fire and killed her to keep her from shutting it down. I don’t think Rachel knows he’s alive and I think she’s doing to feel hurt, angry and betrayed when she finds out.

I haven’t really given much thought about the lung disease, but this is an interesting idea.

Agree to all of these.
