1928-1947
[1] Casablanca
[7] All Quiet on the Western Front
[6] Gone With the Wind
[4] The Best Years of Our Lives
“Gone With The Wind” is again one of those choices where I personally wasn’t all that enamored with the movie, but cannot deny its influence.
1948-1967
[1] Lawrence of Arabia
[2] On the Waterfront
[6] In the Heat of the Night
[4] The Apartment
It’s funny how much harder the choices get in the second round. This was a tough bracket, despite the obvious greatness of my choices; it hurt to get rid of some of those movies.
1968-1987
[1] The Godfather
[2] One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
[11] The French Connection
[4] Platoon
Wow, Platoon versus The Deer Hunter. I wanted both to lose.
1988-2007
[9] Braveheart
[2] Schindler’s List
[6] The Departed
[5] Forrest Gump
I bet I’m the only person who picks Forrest Gump. It’a fashionable, especially on the Net, to say it sucked; I think it was a masterpeice.
I also picked Braveheart over Return of the King, which I am confident will win the bracket. Braveheart wasn’t the best Best Picture winner ever; it was pretty good, though. “Return of the King,” however, was not a very good movie at all. I thought it much weaker than its predecessors, especially the awesome “Fellowship of the Ring,” and its getting all the Oscar glory was pretty obviously a way of rewarding the whole series; on its own merits it might be the worst Best Picture choice ever.

[3] American Beauty (Mendes, 1999)
[5] Forrest Gump (Zemeckis, 1994)
1928-1947
[1] *Casablanca * (Love Mutiney, but very little tops Casablanca.)
[2] Rebecca (Tough call. I am going with Rebecca for sentimental reasons)
[3] It Happened One Night * (I don’t care if I am wrong, this was a great movie)
[5] The Lost Weekend * (Wyler vs. Wilder tough choice. Gotta give weekend the nod)
1948-1967
[1] Lawrence of Arabia (Yeah, Hamlet really doesn’t stand a chance)
[2] On the Waterfront (Niether does a Man for all Seasons)
[3] All About Eve (Neither does in the Heat of the Night)
[4] The Apartment (Wilder vs. Wyler again. This one was easier)
1968-1987
[1] The Godfather (Too bad, I was hoping Patton would get farther.)
[2] One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (I have no clue who will win this. Interesting match up)
[3] *The Sting * (This hurt, but I could watch The Sting every day and not be tired of it. Not so much with The French Connection)
[5] *The Deer Hunter * (Another interesting match-up. Don’t know who will take this either)
1988-2007
[1] The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
[10] Unforgiven
[3] American Beauty
[4] The Silence of the Lambs
This whole round was a lot easier than I expected. The only movie I voted for that I don’t love was LOTR, and only a couple were really even coin flips.
1928-1947

1988-2007
[1] The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Jackson, 2003)
[10] Unforgiven (Eastwood, 1992) - I know I didn’t vote for it last time, but it WAS my second favorite in the group.
[6] The Departed (Scorsese, 2006) - frankly I think both of these are overrated
[5] Forrest Gump (Zemeckis, 1994) - this one hurt too

[3] American Beauty (Mendes, 1999)
[4] The Silence of the Lambs (Demme, 1991)
1928-1947
[1] Casablanca (Curtiz, 1942) This one’s going all the way through on my ballots.
[2] Rebecca (Hitchcock, 1940) All Quiet isn’t that great imho
[3] It Happened One Night (Capra, 1934) Wind is a good movie; this is the closest contest of this category. But Clark Gable sans undershirt is the better Gable.
[5] The Lost Weekend (Wilder, 1945)
1948-1967
[1] Lawrence of Arabia (Lean, 1962) Excellent movie.
[7] A Man for All Seasons (Zinnemann, 1966) Yeah, I know, it won’t win. But I’m a history buff and this filmed play is better than many.
[6] In the Heat of the Night (Jewison, 1967)
[5] Ben-Hur (Wyler, 1959) Go chariots!!!
1968-1987
[8] Patton (Schaffner, 1970) I think I mentioned before how I feel about the Godfather movies…
[2] One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Forman, 1975)
[11] The French Connection * (Friedkin, 1971)
I don’t care about 4 v 5. Mentioned, I did, how I feel about such movies.
1988-2007
[1] The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Jackson, 2003) Much as I hate what he did with this entry in the trilogy most, Braveheart * simply takes too many liberties with history for me to love it.
[2] Schindler’s List (Spielberg, 1993)
[3] American Beauty (Mendes, 1999)
[4] The Silence of the Lambs (Demme, 1991)
