Oscar Madness - The Also-Rans (R1)

This is one of 4 Oscar Madness showdowns running, with this one having films that won multiple Oscars (but not Best Picture) square off against each other in four different time periods. All seeds and line-ups determined by the user poll data from the IMDB. Only feature-length fiction films were under consideration, and a director is limited to one film in each era.

Please make your answers legible. The deadline is Wed. July 2 at 9am PST.

I don’t mind voting for the Capra (the first film I ever remember seeing, so I’ve got a soft spot) since I suspect Philadelphia will still take it. Still, otherwise pretty basic, though the choices were harder than in the Winners thread. I’m not crazy about voting for the overrated Butch but have to admit it’s still better than the Friedkin, and on another day, I probably could’ve just as easily voted for the Pixar (though I’d be surprised if it survives this round).

[9] Life Is Beautiful (Benigni, 1998/Italy) (This movie made me cry.)

I just love the citing of 8 1/2 as being directed by “Fellini/ 1963 Italy.” What, did they all take a turn?

Anyway

1928-1947
[1] The Wizard of Oz
[15] A Star is Born
[3] Seventh Heaven
[4] The Philadelphia Story
[5] The Grapes of Wrath
[11] Fantasia
[7] Sunrise
[8] Black Narcissus

I am probably the only person in the world who wouldn’t pick Miracle on 3th Street. “A Star is Born” was a toughie too. “The Wizard of Oz” is not my cup of tea - I’m straight, I guess - but you cannot deny its impact and technical skill.

[1] Sunset Blvd
[15] The Quiet Man
[3] The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
[4] High Noon
[12] Bonnie and Clyde
[6] 8½ (Fellini, 1963/Italy)
[7] The Red Shoes
[8] The Hustler

Tough bracketing; I ended up with a lot of movies I would not have chosen over movies I would have ranked ahead of them. It killed me to eliminate Dr. Zhivago.

1968-1987
[1] Star Wars
[2] The Empire Strikes Back
[3] Raiders of the Lost Ark
[13] Network
[12] All the President’s Men (Pakula, 1976)
[6] Raging Bull
[7] Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
[8] Fanny and Alexander

Really fascinating choices here. “Star Wars” is picked for its impact, again, so I found it tough to also pick “The Empire Strikes Back,” but it was a better movie than “The Last Picture Show,” which I detested, so the SW franchise gets two nods due to the bracketing. It was very tough to eliminate “Aliens,” and tomorrow I might think I want to change my vote, but it’s a movie with some missteps. “Raging Bull” was the easiest choice in the contest.

Had I been make the list I’d have included “Back to the Future” over a lot of these films.
[1] The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
[15] Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
[3] The Matrix
[4] Saving Private Ryan
[5] Pan’s Labyrinth
[11] Fargo
[10] There Will Be Blood
[9] Life Is Beautiful

The first Lord of the Rings movie was by far the best. I chose “The Matrix,” like “Wizard of Oz,” as an acknowledgment of its impact; I personally enjoyed it but it didn’t give me a huge boner like it apparently did everyone else. Terminator 2 versus There Will Be Blood was a very weak matchup.

I felt bad eliminating “The Incredibles,” and would have put “Finding Nemo” on the list before a lot of these films.

Thanks for the comments.

I made it a policy to include the country of origin for any foreign-language film, just for clarification purposes.

I didn’t either (Narcissus is in my Desert Island 10) but I’m not holding my breath for P&P…

B2tF (which is in the “Losers” showdown) only won 1 Oscar, so doesn’t qualify for this showdown. Ditto Nemo (which didn’t make the “Losers” cut); The Incredibles is the only Pixar film to win 2. And like I said in another thread, these weren’t my choices–this was strictly off the IMDB rankings.
