Oscar Nominations

Actually, that’s backwards: Fitzgerald won in the Supporting Actor
category. The Actor Oscar went to his co-star, Bing Crosby.

PS: Fitzgerald later accidentally decapitated his Oscar with a golf club. After he (or his studio) paid $35 for a replacement statue, some Hollywood wag noted that Fitzgerald managed to get two Oscars after all.

For the record, here are all the eligible animated features that weren’t nominated:

Adam Sandler’s Eight Crazy Nights
Alibaba & The Forty Thieves
Eden
El Bosque Animado (The Living Forest)
Hey Arnold! The Movie
Jonah - A VeggieTales Movie
Mutant Aliens
The Powerpuff Girls Movie
The Princess And The Pea
Return to Never Land
Stuart Little 2
**
The Wild Thornberrys Movie*

No, I haven’t heard of half of these, either.

  • Did get a Best Song nomination
** SL2 submitted itself for consideration in this category and was accepted. Presumably, other CGI-heavy movies could’ve done the same, but chose not to (presumably because of the “stigma” of being considered a “cartoon”).

And ironically, that was the first film in almost a decade to split its Best Picture (Chariots of Fire) and Director (Reds) winner.

I’d like to know what exactly it is you’re smoking, since I think it’s a minor miracle that the notoriously conservative music branch (you know, the ones that were scared of the Bee Gees) nominated an honest-to-goodness rap song, let alone one from such a controversial figure (though it helped that the film was good and had some Oscar-cred talent involved).

There is absolutely no way that Eminem is going to win an Oscar. None. For one generation, the favorite will be the song that hearkens back to the classic age of musicals, for another the favorite will be the one by the popular 60s folk/light rock icon, for yet another generation the favorite may be the Irish rockers who are also conveniently liberal. How many hip-hop generation Academy members are there to compete with that? Not a whole lot.

Too bad, since it is easily the best song of the bunch.

I’m weighing in a little late, I know, but the coolest nomination of the bunch is Queen Latifah for Chicago. I haven’t seen the movie yet (it just opened last weekend here in Kansas City)–come to think of it, I haven’t seen ANY of the movies or performances nominated. But I have always thought Latifah was great, whether it’s rapping, singing or acting–I hope she wins.

I’ve seen all of the Best Picture nominees except The Pianist, and right now I’m really hoping that The Hours wins. It was a beautiful, intense film.

Also, I find it interesting that so many people are commenting on next years awards – namely how RotK should win Best Picture and Best Director and all that. We haven’t even seen the movie, guys!
