OTC fat burning agents

You know stuff like Metabo-Lite, and the million other copycat pills etc etc that use ephedra…

I was thinking about trying some the stuff to help me get rid of my Homer Simpson gut. Then I read the warnings on the label, and said silenty to myself, “They sell this s#^t over the counter and call it SAFE???”

There was no way I am buying something, to put in my body, that if you have a cup of coffee, while taking it, could make your heart go in cardiac arrest or worse. Egads.

I have to stay away from cold medicines that ephedrine in them cause they make me a jittery nervous wreck. AFAIK, I am not allergic to ephedrine but it seems like bad-bad stuff, regardless.

Anyone here have any bad experiences with ehphedra based fat burner pills? Feel free to offer any “official” dirt on the topic as well. This fat burner stuff can not be good for a person.

Your own body contains the only fat-burning system that really works. It’s called muscles. The more you use this system, the more fat you burn. If you don’t feel up to running (ouch) or racquetball (crunch) you can simply walk. A mile of walking burns just as much fat as a mile of running. It just takes longer.

Some information concerning Ephedra:

I agree with AskKnott. Get off the couch and on the road. At least do that walking. I walk 2 - 3 miles a day and it keeps the fat off. I am 72 and still walking every morning. It really works better than any pills will ever work for you.

Yeah, MSK, don’t be messin with that stuff. Look what it did to Wildest Bill!

Don’t you think that if this stuff worked, all the legitimate pharmaceutical companies would market versions of it and make a gazillion bucks?

Given all the money they spend on ads, and given the potential market for weight-loss, I’m sure they could sell a lot more of the stuff than these off-brand concerns.

Bravo! My 87-year-old grandfather is alive today because of an exercise program he started at 65. At that time he weighed 280lb at 5’7". His body type means that he’s never been thin - he was made for hard labor, which as a boy in the Texas panhandle there was a lot of. But as he rose in his firm he sat more and more…so as a retirement present, several of the executives gave him a membership at a very cush health club with beautiful grounds. He started working with a trainer, focusing on walking and eating a sensible but not restrictive diet. In about 18 months he lost 70 pounds, which allowed him to stop taking his blood pressure medication, continue eating normally (though not excessively) and enjoy life.

Long story, sorry! (I’m really proud of him.) Moral: if he can, anyone can.

Obviously the consensus is: fat burn pills = bad

Thanks for the feedback.
