Because I have no life to speak of, I spent a portion of my evening looking at all the other Dopers webpages. They were all really cool. Not that I was surprised by that, but there are some pretty crappy sites out there in the internet jungle. I was wondering if anyone else does this…and if they would share their comments. All lot of people work hard on these glimpses into their personal lives/thoughts/actions/feelings/etc. I also think it would be fun to trade info or tricks used on your sites.
I find it interesting…these web pages…they are so public, yet very voyeuristic.
Ah, well…here is mine:
I’ve only got time now for a quick looksee (in another browser window) cuz it’s nearly 3am and I should be asleep… but I like your site. What I like most so far is how quickly it loads. I’ve waited longer than five minutes for some really crappy pages.
I look at other posters’ websites if they attract my curiosity. If they refer to their sites in a post, I might take a look around. Otherwise… I mean, jeez, it’s not like I really need to spend more time online…
Two things help in this area. The first is Flash…I love this program…even with a bitmap image (like the donkey on the first page) it optimizes well and loads quickly. The second page is slower, but you’d be amazed at the number of elements it took to get it together. In my mind (considering the number of elements in the movie) it should take 5 minutes to load. Even with a 56K modem it does pretty well. I’ve tried many differnet programs to attempt to get load times dowm. No matter how cool the site it, if it takes a long time to load, no-one will go. My site is still under heavy construction, but I’ve tried to make it interactive and fun on many different levels.
The second thing is only having one big element on each page. One big movie loads a lot quicker than many small movies, obviously. Of course, I use a Mac, which rocks for this kind of work, in terms of ease of use and flexibility.
Both…sort of. My S.O. is German…so I hear a lot of it. Also, I do love the language, especially in this context. I think the harsh tones work well with the cartoon-like nature of that page. And “derlachendeEsel” sounds so cool, to me anyway.
Anyway, my whole idea is to get rid of all text on this site until you get to the page you want…that is why I used German…I want you to be able to tell from the pictures where to go, or at least be interested in what the pictures might mean.
I know I’m a geek, I just find the web interface bewteen people interesting. You get a glimpse of me without any other info than what is on my site.
