Ouch! (could be tmi)

I hurt my knee a few hours ago. Here’s how it happened: I got home and realized someone had left the dog out in the heavily pouring rain. Not having his leash with me, I decided to carry him into the house rather than going inside, then coming back out (he’s at a stage when he’ll run off if he get’s the chance). So, anyway, I tripped over something in the driveway, and the extra weight of the dog, and my heavy winter boots caused me to fall hard on my knee. Of course, falling on the wet ground caused me to get soaked. While changing into something dry, I noticed one of my legs felt *really * wet. A quick glance revealed a hot pink pea sized hole in my knee that was oozing blood. In fact, more blood oozed out everytime I walked, or bent my knee. Several band-aids have been needed because the blood runs under the glue, and makes it pucker, then fall off.

Anyone else get hurt recently and want to commiserate?

Random thoughts:

I still can’t decide whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing that I fell on the all ready slightly bad knee, instead of the good one.
This thing hurts way more than I thought it would. The pain is the reason I’m up now, sharing this story with the world. Plus it’s making me feel slightly nauseated (and why on earth doesn’t anyone in this house have any pain medication?).
In addition to ruining my Saturday plans, this thing is probably going to ruin a lot more.

If it’s still bleeding several hours after you fell, you may want to go to a Doc-in-a-Box first thing in the morning. It may need to be cleaned out. Also, if you haven’t had a Tetanus shot in the last 5 years you’ll need one.

In this thread, post # 15 you can see pictures of the finger I caught in a car door two weeks ago.

I’m going to second going to see a doctor or a local clinic of some sort. If it’s still bleeding something’s kinda wrong, and they might be able to find out why it’s so darn painful.

I haven’t cut myself recently…but I did bend my thumb so far backward that it hurts like a mofo. Does that count?

Thanks for the advice. The bleeding did stop after awhlie. Now the knee is too swollen to bend, and the kneecap feels kind of “floaty” so I’ll get it checked out if it’s still like that tomorrow.

Did you end up losing the nail picunurse? And yea, bent thumbs count too.

This isn’t recent, and I’ve mentioned it here before, but the last time I hurt myself significantly was at work a year and a half ago. (It was my own fault though, so while I probably could have played the whiny litigious victim by complaining that they didn’t provide me the right tools for the job, that’s not my style) I was trying to cut through a zip tie that was holding a tool case closed with a box cutter. (Never mind that this is a stupid thing to do – I knew that even then, but I’m normally quite careful) Box cutter in left hand, cutting left-to-right. Right hand holding top of case still while I wiggled the knife through the thick plastic of the tie. You can see where this is going, can’t you? Yep. Made it through tie unexpectedly and my left hand used its remaining momentum to carry the knife, still being held open by my thumb, plunging into and through the soft tissue of my index finger between the last knuckle joint and my palm. Amazingly I didn’t slice a vein or injure the muscle – it seemed to miss all the important bits.

I knew what I had done the minute I felt the knife’s hilt slam against my hand, and I immediately dropped the knife and clamped my right hand with my left. I didn’t actually see it happen and shock prevented me from feeling anything other than the initial dull thud of the knife, but my mind couldn’t conceive of how this could have gone down any other way. I quickly ran into the bathroom and with trepidation lifted my left hand slightly to assess the damage on my right. Yup. Blood was oozing out, and my left palm was covered in it. Not cool. I washed out as best I could – moving my hand over the soft part where the cut was caused it to bulge and slide like the top of a plastic sandwich bag. Yecch.

Long story short, the funny part was that this all took place while a troupe of firefighters were browsing the tools in the shop, so I received a bit of EMT attention and a proper dressing for the wound.
