Rather like how my grandfather went. The night before he was largely incoherent, then he slipped into sleep for the last time around 8 or 9. My father noticed he wasn’t breathing around 9:30 and he was already cooling down, so to speak.
Please let me know here or wherever if there is anything I can do to help you, matt
The response it’s gotten from his folks at CBC has really blown us away - we’ve been listening to the radio for the last hour, and they produced a 20-minute piece on the World at 6. It’s amazing to get a handle on the importance he held.
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I just finished reading that beautiful tribute to your father and have tears in my eyes. What a great man he was and least of all for raising a son like you.
My deepest condolences go out to you and yours, Matt. I know we don’t really know each other, having only briefly conversed at the NYCFest, but you can always e-mail me if you’d like.
~hugs~
I don’t know what to say, mate. Words are empty - they mean far less than the tear in the messenger’s eye. My condolences, Matt.
Try to find peace in the fact that he went with little pain… it’s more than a lot of people can hope for.
And can I just say… on that CBC Montreal page… I LOVE that shot of your father getting off the plane! Very… journalist-like, for lack of a better word. I like the shot of him with you and your mom (I’m assuming), too.
He sounds like a man who made the most out of his 56 years, Matt. There’s tons of people who live to be 100, and they don’t achieve nearly as much.
Rest in peace, ** David McLauchlin**. May your spirit guide Matt throughout his further path in life.
I’m so sorry, matt – but I’m glad that none of you has to wait any more for him to be at rest. When my in-laws and my dad were dying, after a while we all just wanted it to be over. My thoughts are with you and your family now that your wait is over, too.
