Are there any good ways to make cranberry sauce when fresh cranberries aren’t available? I’ve heard of frozen cranberries but have never seen them in the grocery store. Can I make it out of juice, dried berries, or the stuff in a can?
My Thanksgiving in June menu won’t be the same without cranberry sauce.
Frozen cranberries can be substituted straight for fresh and I can usually find them by visiting 2-3grocery stores. For next year just buy an extra bag of fresh at thanksgiving and freeze them. I usually buy as many bags as I can when they go on sale after Christmas for use in muffins and smoothies. They freeze quite well.
Almost missed the important part. The stuff in the can is already cranberry sauce (of a sort) and the juice and dried cranberries are so processed, sweetened and diluted that I doubt you would have success with any of them.
I like my cranberry sauce fairly orangey so I would try a can of the whole berry sauce and a little orange juice. Heat it for a while then chill overnight.
Well, I found two bags of frozen cranberries deep in the freezer at Whole Foods. This fall, I will make sure to buy and freeze enough fresh ones to get me through the year. Thanks!
Glad you found them! For future reference, I’ve had some success with doctoring the whole berry sauce in cans by adding orange zest and minced candied ginger. It’s not the same, but it’s certainly edible, even tasty.
