A few of us participate in an Out of the Park League already. But I’ve got an opportunity to give another one a shot.
For those who don’t know. Out of the Park Baseball is a baseball simulation in which players function as a quasi GM/Field Manager for a baseball team. It’s not based on real players. The players are created by the software.
Players get to:
Draft minor leaguers
Manage their development (if they develop)
Set line ups, depth charts and pitching set ups.
Make trades
Promote and demote players
Deal with arbitration and salary issues (and demands)
Bid on free agents
Hire and compete for coaches, scouts, and minor league managers
Manage a disabled list, waivers and waiver claims
Manage a budget, a stadium, promotional events, deal with national and local television contracts and such
Track player development
Have players come into the free agent pool from Cuba and Asia and have to be bid upon
Manage Spring Training (what players get playing time, what skills they should try to develop, and so forth)
In short, I know baseball, and this is the best actual simulation of a baseball system I know. It’s a wonderful game.
The games are run offline by a commissioner, me and one other ex-Doper. Players are responsible for setting lineups and such before each sim of 5 or so games.
We have, I think, five players already and are hoping to start the league with twelve teams to begin with and are open to expansion down the road should interest be that high.
We’ll be playing using OOTP 6.5. It’s not the latest version but it’s a mature system and, frankly, I didn’t like the OOTP 2006 changes much. There’s a cost for the game from the OOTP guys of about $30 for the first game and the 6.5 expansion.
It’s a great game and a great way to explore baseball. This isn’t a stats-counting game…it’s true baseball but simulated. Every game, every player, every swing of the bat is tracked. Great stuff.
