I was just thinking about how when I was in school the style was too look absolutely dressed to the nines before leaving the house. Now everyone looks like they just rolled out of bed!
Most of the things people are mentioning they don’t wear anymore because they’re “not stylish” sort bum me out. If you want to wear something you like, why not wear it? What do you care what other people think? (Actually they might think you’re cool and retro or ironic, how 'bout that?)

I hear you! I was just thinking that I’m going to wear one of my thin ties next chance I get. The fedora will be a little tougher - it needs to be re-blocked, and there aren’t any places around that do that anymore.
Where have you guys been? I know someone said it but plaid (as in kilts) and knee-socks are really cool now. I OWN a pair of Z. Cavaricci’s and I wear them too (I’m 14). Plus maybe you have been hanging around the wrong schools because I know that with the girls at least, at my school the look is to wear heels and really dark, fitted jeans with a nice shirt … if you look like a slob it’s not cool! Also halter tops are always cool (as are short shorts and miniskirts) … short hair is coming back, and as for fedoras, 40’s retro is the newest thing! Also bowling shirts are cool because vintage anything is very chic.
Fedoras? Out of style? (Ralph Wiggam voice) “That’s unpossible”. I’ve worn a fedora for almost twenty years and have only gotten compliments. Real hats will never go out of style. Now if only these stinking baseball caps (especially ones worn backwards) would fade from the scene. Along with the oversized clothes that make everyone look like some sort of thug. (“Where are you hiding the sawed off shotgun?”)
My button down collar shirts have gone in and out of style three times. Twice now for my Rayban aviators. I have GOT to get another embroidered Mexican wedding shirt.
Other trends that I wish would come back? How about articulate conversation? Martinis are coming back into style (woo hoo!). (See recipe at bottom of thread.) Microbreweries that make fine Pilseners and lagers. (I am SO tired of ale, porter and stout.)
How to make a Martini so dry that you’ll fart dust.
[li]Chill all implements of desrtuction.[/li]
[li]Only use ice that is so dry it sticks to you.[/li]
[li]Fill chilled shaker with ice.[/li]
[li]Pour a shot of vermouth over the ice.[/li]
[li]Wait a few seconds and pour off vermouth.[/li]
[li]Pour in a high quality gin (Bombay or Boodles).[/li]
[li]Pour thimble of whisky into the chilled glass.[/li]
[li]Stir shaker for ten seconds.[/li]
[li]Pour whisky out of the glass.[/li]
[li]Fill glass and garnish with twist of lemon.[/li]
Guzzle while making greedy slurping noises.
Zenster–we really need to get together for a drink! That’s the best recipe for a martini I’ve ever seen–my lips are dry just thinking about it!
I miss the true trivia craze–before eveybody thought that remembering all old commercials and fashion models was trivia.
What’s the most common number of stars on national flags?
Which has been played the longest–handball, racquetball or paddleball?
Which U.S. President was presented with a jackass by Spain?
Zenster: not to nitpick here, but the recipe you’ve posted is not a dry martini. It is, in fact, a smoky martini (and you’ll probably get better results from scotch than whisky). A dry martini is made solely with gin and (a little) dry vermouth. Also I believe that you’ll get better results with, say, Tanqueray or Beefeaters than Bombay, but thats just a question of one’s own tastes.
Other than that, though, you’ve got it right. Nothing is more disapointing than a warm martini.
I know a couple people here have already said this, but plaid and tartan are VERY in for fall and winter fashions this year. So, pull those mini-kilts and black turtleneck out of the back of the closet!
I wish shoulder pads would become trendy again; not those gigantic football player looking ones (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, please refer to old episodes of Dynasty), but just enough to make your shirts look a little more dressy and not like they’re hanging off of you.
I miss those gigantic sweaters that were popular when I was in high school. You know–the ones that came down to your knees, and usually were Benetton or Forenza. Now, I didn’t wear them, and I didn’t appreciate them at the time, but [serious moment]I think that they were probably a lot better for girls than the clothes that are being worn today in high school. Back then, if you had a less-than-perfect body, it was easily camoflagued. Now, everybody seems to be wearing skin-tight shirts and stretch pants that show every lump and bump. Also, these tight clothes are so overtly sexual. I guess it is better for young girls who are still maturing and still coming to terms with their sexuality to kind of hide their lights under a bushel, if you know what I mean. There is plenty of time to be sex goddesses later.[/serious moment]
