Overlooked/underappreciated music (rock)

i forgot to mention:

The Jayhawks
Wilco
Nick Drake

Yeah, Wilco is great.

Michael Hedges. Great guitarist (dead). Most people say Michael who? when I say his name. He would simultaneously (sp?) play bass and guitar. Incredible! Great cover versions of Sheila E’s “Love Bizarre” and Beatle’s “Come Together”.

Phish. I realize they have a huge following, but still think they should be played more on the radio.

i’d back up the aforementioned Delbert and Wilco. and i’d add The Tragically Hip.

Yanni and John Tesh.

I’m sorry I couldn’t resist…I would put up a bounty on these two d-bags if I wouldn’t go to jail.

How about Boston, they were the 1st to take rock and roll and mix in synthesizers without sounding cheezy or popish.

one word:

CAKE

http://www.pillowphat.com

Wow!! I love Cake!! Where are you from, Pillow? Cake was mildly popular for awhile here in South Carolina (mainly because of “Rock and Roll Lifestyle”, but “The Distance” and their cover of “I Will Survive” got a lot of radio time, too). Now, they’re just kinda where are they now type people.

They never got anywhere, but I loved’em: 13th Floor Elevators

Also, Miss T. mentioned Mountain; their bassist, Felix Pappalardi (sp?) was unique in his playing and a good songwriter to boot.

Golden Smog, hybrid band made up of various members from the Jayhawks, Wilco and Soul Asylum. Their most recent, “Strange Tales”, is a revelation.

Roy Wood.Before ELO turned into a selfparody.Check www.roywood.com
the guy is now 60, so anything he can manage is appreciated by his fans.Roy Wood’d Wizzard took off from ELO splitting after 2nd album.

Warren Zevon. Everyone knows ‘Werewolves of London’, but this doesn’t even make the top 10 of his best songs. Check out songs like “Carmelita”, “Accidentally Like a Martyr”, “Desperados Under the Eaves”, “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner”, “Lawyers, Guns, and Money”, and the list goes on and on…

"And if California slides into the ocean,
Like the mystics and statistics say it will,
I predict this motel will be standing,
Until I pay my bill.

Don’t the sun look angry through the trees
Don’t the trees look like crucified thieves
Don’t you feel like desperados under the eaves
Heaven help the one who leaves.

I’ll go with, Supertramp.

Breakfast in America is one of my most played records. That’s right…RECORD!

One that just reoccurred to me as I was looking through my vinyl collection: Utopia, Todd Rundgren’s band of the late 70s-early 80s. Especially their pop-oriented albums like * Swing to the Right, Deface the Music* and Oops! Wrong Planet/.

I really like Live’s 2nd album “Throwing Copper” but their third wasn’t that good…They kind of ran out of gas.

Bad Religion is greatly underappreciated. First of all, it seems that many people have heard them but no one that I know personally. They have a very loyal following but it’s scattered out everywhere. Second of all, with so many people who have become brainwashed with the pop-ish sounds and meaningless songs that society has been producing a great number of these days, it’s nearly impossible to get anyone to appreciate the truth in their lyrics.

Soul Coughing.
It’s all about Soul Coughing.
They’re a little-known band from NY that blends rock, jazz, hip-hop, and spoken word into a Beat-style combo that is unlike anything you’ve ever heard (except possibly the band 808 State, which was the lead singer’s last project). Go buy all three of their albums, and go to their homepage (www.soulcoughing.com) and download remixes. We must support the Cough!
[Incidentally, I missed a large number of their Mp3s O’The Month, if anyone is interested in mailing them too me I would be deliriously happy. Thanx.]

Golden Smog is awesome! i saw them live, highly recommend it!
btw, the album name is Wierd Tales

i second that one… i love “Then Play On”

Chief’s Domain - http://www.seas.ucla.edu/~ravi

Damn Straight it’s Soul Coughing!

By the way, I have a few of those mp3s of the month.

Also check out Velvet Chain http://www.velvetchain.com
(they were featured on Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

and Low http://www.cro-magnon.com/low/
(I know their webmistress, and i trust her taste in music more than mine. She introduced me to Soul Coughing)

I will second that–particularly “Fully Completely” and “Day For Night”. Although they are thought of as Gods in their native Canada, they are relatively unknown in the US (unless you live near the border or in Texas, oddly enough).

I’ve said it here before and I’ll say it again–they are the best live band I’ve ever seen.
