Does anyone know of a line of hair clips and barrettes for women with more than the average amount of hair? A Northern Light search didn’t turn up anything useful and my friends just grumbled and called me lucky. The volunteers at Allexperts specialize in other hair questions.
Hair clips pop open on me. I’ve got more than they can hold. It’s fine and straight and doesn’t frizz. Can any Dopers suggest a workable alternative to scrunchies and headbands?
Hmmm, good question. I opened this thread thinking it was a comment on how huge some of them are. My hair is past my shoulders for the first time in my life, and so I’ve been buying “hair toys” for several months now. Some of those clips and barrettes are so huge, I wonder how anyone has hair to fill them!
Do you braid (or French braid) your hair? Maybe you could find a way to put up/tie back your hair in sections, so you could use regular-size clips.
Braids go best with scrunchies. They’re okay on a summer weekend but not quite the look for a nightclub or business meeting.
Sometimes I section it and make two buns. Then I feel self-conscious because who wears their hair like that? A single bun is too thick to twist properly and looks like a kaiser roll.
I’ve semi-seriously offered to be a hair transplant donor.
Go get a copy of that Klutz Press book on hairstyles. They sell them at WaldenBooks, Barnes & Noble, they’ve got a big rotating display stand back in the children’s books. There are some fabulous lifesaving ideas, with clear instructions, about how to do more with your hair than just braid it.
A couple of ideas for you.Have you tried hair combs (not the 80’s daggy ones) or those chopstick type things? See this site: http://www.bbahneycomm.com/longhairlovers/ . They have heaps of ideas and styles for long hair. (The “coiled topknot” style is pretty cool)
My hair is only to my shoulders at the moment, but I’m woking on it. Good luck with it.
Second, do you take the inner spring part out of regular barrettes?
If you look at the back of a large barrette, there is the bar that flips up and down and holds your hair in…it bends in, concave-like. Underneath that is another bar (bends out) that doesn’t really do anything except provide spring and reduce the amount of hair that can fit in.
You can pull these out fairly easily and it should give you more room.
Hmmm. I just looked at a barrette I carry in my purse and notice it doesn’t have the two bars, but it’s a cheap one, you may have to look around.
Not that I’m complaining much - I’d rather have too thick hair than too thin!
Anyhow, here’s how I handle it:
I frequently wear the hair in three braids (each of which is about as thick as what the average woman gets using all her hair), one on each side and one in the back. I then pull back the two on the sides and rubberband them. I can then scrunchie them, use a clip or barrette, or other fancy hairtoy of normal size to dress it up. Yes, I wear this to business meetings, too, with an appropriately fancy hairtoy.
I make oversize hairtoys. You’ve seen those leather things with two holes for a stick to go through to hold the hair? The ones too small to stuff all your hair into? I make my own, but oversized.
Headscarves! Get a piece of colorful fabric about 3-4 inches wide and 4-6 feet long and use it to hold back your hair to keep it out of your eyes. Either let it hang free behind, or go for multiple braids.
My hair is shoulder length and so thick that I pull 2 inch sections into pony tails with elastic bands made by Scunci. They look like pieces of plastic, but they won’t get tangled in your hair like rubber bands, and they are much stronger than scrunchies. Then you can adorn your hair with normal size ornamentation, because I bust out every spring clip I’ve ever tried.
First off, I love long hair. Now, don’t get me wrong, but perhaps you don’t really need “gadgets” to keep that lengthy mop in control.
I’ve found that a few (properly placed) drops of super-glue tidies up even the most unruly of coifs. For those with an active life-style, a few dabs of 3M 5200 Marine Sealant (available in white & black) provides a smooth and secure look even in the worst weather.
I was in an Aveda store a few days ago and they had what looked like stretchy beaded bracelets, but they were for the hair. I’d imagine you could make those very easily…they had semi-precious stones and metallic beads.
They also had really big ones with randomly placed beads for use as headbands. I think the idea was that the color of the elastic matched the color of your hair, so that the beads seemed to be “floating”.
They also had ones that were leather cord on top, with elastic on the bottom for use as headbands.
Sheesh, you could just get some thin leather strap/cording and use THAT to tie back a low ponytail, wrapping it around a few times…so it covers a couple of inches of your hair…that would be cool.
Try a fabric store, they’ll have elastic cord by the yard, and you’ll probably find some neat trims that could be used in your hair.
How about napkin rings? Some are really cool and you can even get metal adjustable ones.
I have very thick hair and while a regular braid is not really good for business meetings, try this. You can braid your hair into one braid (or two or three) and then flip the end(s) up under the braid(s) and clip them there (making kind of a braid loop). Just make sure not to get too much hair inside the clip or it won’t close. Then you can put a nice leather band or even a sparkling band around it and it makes a very nice “up-do” for going out.
