While reading todays paper and cursing the Childrens Miricle Network for running their fund raising drive on channel 5 causing Stargate:SG1 to be canceled I came accross an article in my paper. The article is, no must be proof that Ozzy is truely the ‘Prince of Darkness’.
The article reported that a second season of “The Osbournes” is going to be filmed and run on MTV. I figured that was going to happen. Reportedly, the base contract gives the Osbournes 5 million. That sounds right. Then in the last paragraph of the article it is stated that Simon and Schuster has signed the “Osbourne Family” to a contract for two books!!!
WTF? While I love Ozzy, and have for years, what are the books going to be about?
My thoughts on possible titles:
“Chicken Soup for the Prince of Darkness’s Soul”
“The Osbourne Family Cookbook: Annoy your nieghbors with Fruit”
“The Osbournes Guide to Raising Your f*****G Mad Kids”
Well Ozzy has written lyrics to some of the best selling records around. He is also one of the most influental singers in the last 30 years. Bands like Metallica, Anthrax, and MegaDeth consider Ozzy the GOD of Heavy Metal. His OZZFEST tour has been and is one of the largest tours in the US.
SO, Guinastasia, what have you been doing for the past 30 years?
While Ozzy isn’t in the best shape he is a major player in the music of the last 30 years. His latest CD is the best stuff he has done since “Diary of a Madman”.
I was ready to turn this thread into a BBQ PIT post ! Thanks to you, **sleestak ** I dont have to say another word ! Very well said, indeed !
As for the "Prince of Darkness** moniker, the first time I heard it was when Ozzy said it in an episode of the Osbournes. I think most people in the community consider him to be The Godfather of Metal, whereas Rob Halford is simply “The Metal God”.
Ozzy is a wonderfully nice guy and, at the same time, a total freak. I have met him. Ozzy was totally engaging when we talked about music. When I strayed from music Ozzy lost interest yet when music came up Ozzy was totally focused. He remembered everything.
OK, I’m a huge Ozzy fan, but there is some confusion regarding who actually wrote Ozzy’s lyrics. I heard an interview with Ozzy a few weeks ago on a local radio station, where he said Geezer Butler wrote his Sabbath lyrics, which is confirmed here and Bob Daisley, Ozzy’s former bassist after he went solo wrote the lylrics for Ozzy’s first 5 solo studio albums. I don’t feel like looking up the last albums of his career, but its safe to assume he didn’t up and decide to write all the lyrics for those albums.
Of course, Ozzy still rules, only 6 weeks til I get to see him at Ozzfest!
If you require further proof that Ozzy is, in fact, the Prince of Darkness, I have an mp3 of Ozzy and Dweezil Zappa doing a cover of Stayin’ Alive.
Yes, that Stayin’ Alive.
Yes, the BeeGees.
No, I’m not making this up.
I have no idea what album it’s from, since the ID3 tag doesn’t say. But still, it ranks pretty high on the bizarre scale. The song starts off with Ozzy shouting “All Aboard…” like he does at the beginning of Crazy Train, and then continues “…the disco train!” In the middle of the song, he rasps out, “I…am…Disco Man!” much like he does at the beginning of Iron Man. All I can say after listening to this exercise in the absurd is that Ozzy has one hell of a sense of humor. If anyone can find this song, it’s definitely worth listening to.
I have that MP3 and it rocks. I also have an MP3 of a Madonna remix of Crazy Train which is pretty cool if it is really her. It sure does sound like her but I am not a fan of her stuff so it could be fake. If it is a fake it is a damned good one.
blur,
This is the first I heard about others writing lyrics for Ozzy but I’d bet that, at least with Bob Daisley, it was more of a group effort[#1]. Having been in and written with bands I know that things can overlap. Someone comes up with an idea and a melody and everyone throws in ideas and after a bit you have a song that everyone added to. Also, according to the article Bob is suing Ozzy but kept coming back even though he thought he was getting ripped off. That doesn’t make much sense to me. Anyway, I bet that the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

#1. In Mr. Crowley there is the line “Was it polemically sent?”. IIRC Jimmy Page, who was a huge Crowley fan, gave Ozzy a Crowley book that Crowley signed ‘Polemically yours’. Ozzy liked the line and put it in the song. I find it hard to believe that Daisley could come up with that on his own without Ozzy being involved. Regretablly I cannot find a cite because when I google for it I find either links about Jimmy Page or the lyrics to Mr. Crowley.
Well, he is dyslexic. And no, he doesn’t generally write his lyrics. Geezer wrote pretty much all the lyrics in Black Sabbath, although Ozzy often did the melodies. I think the one exception to that is the Never Say Die album, where the story is that Ozzy refused to participate unless they let him do the lyrics.
Bob Daisley is generally credited with writing the lyrics for Ozzy’s first three solo studio albums, and probably also much of the stuff on No Rest for the Wicked, but it’s unclear who wrote lyrics on the other albums. Bass player Phil Soussan got disgusted and quit after the Ultimate Sin album and tour, claiming that he was getting ripped off on songwriting credit and royalties, so I suspect he’s responsible for a fair amount of the lyrics on that album. On the other hand, there’s a lot of personal stuff there, so I think Ozzy did at least some of those lyrics. Other than that, it’s hard to tell.
Interestingly, both Daisley and Soussan have their names miscredited on the “Best Of” disc, The Ozzman Cometh. Daisley is listed as “Bob Daisy,” and Soussan is listed as “Bill Susan.” Sounds like Sharon’s doing to me.
I am sorry if you meant that as a joke. A smiley would have helped.
It is just that, for me at least, Ozzy-Black Sabbath have never been given the credit they deserve. I take things personally when it comes to Ozzy. I know the man is a mess due to his drug use but at the same time he is a true artist who deserves credit for what he has done. His first solo album was the reason I decided to play guitar. I have loved the man and his music since I was 11. And since I was 11 people labeled Ozzy a loser, a freak and worse which always bothered me.
