I think that it is the multi-ton set up of a guillotine… looming larger and larger in the distance as the bound victim is transported towards it…that sets up a sense of abject terror in the victim that makes it less humane. A guillotine seems to imply long speeches and sentencing statements intended for the crowds and for posterity ( and for the exhibition of the power of the state) that the victim has to endure in their final hour. A gun might appear from nowhere, and then the victim dies suddenly; with a guillotine there remains the horror of anticipation.
About the only thing that could make a guillotine more cruel ( in my opinion ) would be if you built elaborate Rube Goldberg devices to entertain the crowd for a half hour or so before the action drops the blade.
But like the game “MouseTrap” the device would fail at some point , necessitating adjustments and restarts.
I’m no Psychiatrist, but could that involve “Separation Anxiety” ?
I’m just grateful we have competent PA law enforcement to look into this…

Justin Mohn bought the Sig Sauer 9mm handgun gun the day before the murder in Bristol Township, Schorn said. Authorities say Mohn even gave up his medical marijuana card days before in order to make that purchase.
