Richard Pryor.
He was so good as a headliner, but his black audience made him feel guilty about being funny. So he went back to the black circuit stock race jokes and gave up on humor.

I, too, have a hard time laughing at female comedians. There are one or two I will chuckle at, but mostly they just fall flat for me. I have no idea why. Bad male comedians can usually make me laugh at how bad they are doing, but with a chica, it is just hard to laugh.
Maybe it is something psychological?
One of the few female standups who was consistantly funny was Cathy Ladman.
(bolding mine)
Surprised he’s been mentioned without being added to the list. I fucking hate Dennis Miller.
I’ll second Robin Williams. Nobody’s said Andrew Dice Clay eyt? Can I pick him?
Yet BBVL actually kinda likes her delivery. She seems damaged somehow, like someone with a need to act out an endlessly repetitive OCD ritual in public.
Maybe Lou finds this endearingly vulnerable. I just find it sad, because humor depends on freshness and surprise. Then again, comedy doesn’t imply humor.
Howie Mandel. The only instance where I’ve ever liked him and he did, IMO, a decent job, was on St. Elsewhere.
Robin Williams. I think he’s a terrific actor for the most part. He should stick with that and just forget about standup.
I’ve never liked Eddie Murphy or ** Richard Pryor**. Thing is, I’d see them somewhere mainstream and like both of them, but once I was exposed to their comedy, I was crushed.
I’ve never cared for Rosie O’Donnell, **Margaret Cho]/b], or Wendy Lieberman. They might elicit a chuckle from me here and there, but overall their deliveries rub me the wrong way for some reason.
Before I respond, I have a question. This question is totally, 100% serious and genuine. I honestly do not know the answer to this.
Is Andrew Dice Clay supposed to be funny?
Seriously, is he? After watching various things he’s done, I can’t seem to shake the feeling that the guy is one big inside joke the rest of the world is in on, and I’m just so late to the party that I missed the reveal. Is he going for a Mr. Neil Hamburger type of performance? Or does he actually think the shit he says comes anywhere near resembling something that might, 10,536,427 years ago, in another reality where the world is populated by sentient carpet fuzz, have been considered jokes?
What is this, the “Chris-Rock-Never-Existed” thread???
THE CHRIS ROCK SHOW
Gravel Voice: “White People (fill in blank)-and don’t wanna be around no niggas!”
(Every white boy in place shrieks with laughter!!!)
FINIS
First million times, it was…well, no, the first two times that Dick Gregory told them in the 60s it was funny. Fifty years later, kinda stale.
I think Dane Cook is hilarious, same for George Lopez. I haven’t listened to either in a while, but last time I did I held them in high regard.
I do agree that Dat Phan is pretty unfunny. I also second the vote for Tom Green.
gimme some funny dane cook stuff. i may be missing the boat on him, but i saw the stand up thing he did uncensored on the insomniac tour and didn’t like it.
i haven’t seen one funny george lopez thing.
another horribly unfunny person is mario cantone. being gay isn’t necessarily funny, but being gay and funny DOES open you up to some jokes that straight people can’t do. that’s why ellen’s first show took a giant shit. it’s not because she was gay,. after she came out, she was fery funny and poignant, but lost that when she pandered to the “i’ll be as gay as i can, and therefore, funny”.
the ones that break the mold or talk about that mold are funny. women talk about how much guys suck, black men talk about differences about white people and black people. ethnic people tend to make fun of white people. and white guys talk about how much life sucks/women/obervational stuff.
I was exposed to a comic today by the name of Doug Glass whose whole stick (schtick?) is to tell very stupid jokes and then act like an idiot afterwards. He even had a partner on drums with one of those snazzy Casio keyboards behind him. Just fantastically unfunny - yet he got his own half hour on Comedy Central. How? He took occasional breaks to sip water out of cup that read in large black letters “DOUG GLASS” - thats the kind of crap he did. Truly makes you wonder how some of these comedians get on TV.
I’ll also nominate Jeneanne Gerafalo (sp?) - I saw her perform once and was massively unimpressed. She just stands on stage and rambles about nothing for 45 minutes. Seriously I don’t even think she has an act at all - its like its just whatever pops into her head. How did she ever get famous?
As to there being no funny female comics, two words for you: “Lisa Lampanelli”. Shes funny as hell.

Now I find Lisa Lampanelli painfully unfunny. She comes across as a rude, mean bitch, not witty or charming or endearing or funny at all. And I feel the same way about Sarah Silverman, who tries so hard to make everyone see how CUTE she is, and watch her say these shocking, nasty, mean things which are extra-shocking because she’s so CUTE! Now I don’t find her cute at all, so her entire schtick fails with me. She’s about one step removed from second-graders cursing and hoping to get away with it because they think they’re cute.
I’m pretty sure Norm MacDonald didn’t start the rumor that he was fired for OJ jokes. I don’t know that he was; I just know that it’s suspicious that he was liked by fans and replaced by someone who was so painfully bad. MacDonald got off some good lines from time to time and at least seemed to enjoy his failures. Quinn is an obnoxious clod.
I didn’t see much of Quinn, but I mentally charted the laughs for MacDonalds’ Update turns, and it was horrible. It was like watching him tread water, comedically.

It’s very appropriate that you say “Quinn”, “mentally”, and “horrible” in the same sentence.

I saw Jeneane live, and it was ok, not great. It turned down my celebrity crush for a while. I still think she’s gorgeous in a non-model way, which is really the best way.
She complained that people say she says mean things, and then later commented on those Hollywood bars, where if they exploded, no one in them would be missed.
I didn’t see much of Quinn
You did yourself a favor; I think I would have more fun shooting nails into my skull than watching his act or show. I think Norm MacDonald is moderately funny, but the material on his Weekend Updates was usually not good.
I never thought Sarah Silverman’s appearance had anything to do with her humor. She happens to be cute.
Margaret Cho is painfully unfunny.
All her material seems to revolve around the fact that she’s a plump Chinese-American female comic. Yeah, I noticed all of those things when you walked on. Now be funny.
As for women comics not being as funny, all I have to say is Ellen Degeneres. She cracks me up everytime I see her stand up. I think that Larry the Cable Guy is an overrated turd. All of his jokes end in one of three ways: “Git 'er done”, “I don’t care who you are, that’s funny”, or him asking God for forgivness.
All her material seems to revolve around the fact that she’s a plump Chinese-American female comic.
Korean, actually. And nobody’s mentioned the bisexual/slut jokes.
As to there being no funny female comics, two words for you: “Lisa Lampanelli”. Shes funny as hell.
I was planning on throwing her name out there too, but you beat me to it. Simply the only female comic I’ve ever found the slightest bit funny.
There’s a Paula Poundstone joke here somewhere but damn if I can find it.
Jon Stewart. I’ll never understand the popularity of this guy. He sucked when I saw him on MTB with Jeaneane Garafolo and Vanmilla Ice a few years ago; he sucked when he hosted the Grammys (where even he admitted he sucked); and he sucks now. He has never so much as made me smile.
I’ll also second Garafolo. I doubt that she’d have any career at all if not for the noteriety caused by her political views.
