What if Sara Palin’s daughter were pregnant* at 14? I bet Sara Palin would say this is fine…just like abstinence of her older daughter was all very nice (like a passing fad) until something better “popped up”! I bet anything goes in the Palin household as I am not sure if she stands for anything.
What does the SD say? Call me cruel, but I say Letterman was on the money…
Jinx
P.S. As a wake up call to Mrs. Palin, it doesn’t take someone of adult age to make this happen.
I’d take those bets. I’m a long, long way from being a Palin fan but I doubt she would at any point use, imply or think the word “fine”, although she would be supportive of her daughter. A lot would have to do with the male responsible (and his age) - if it’s another 14 y.o., that’s one thing; if it was someone two or more years older, she (and many others) would be demanding his head on a pike.
And I maintain, as he does, that Letterman was referring to Bristol, not Willow.
Well it’s evidence people believe her teen pregnancy polices are full of crap, as evidence by her pregnant teen, and the belief the other one is likely to get knocked up too.
I disagree with Palin about abstinence-only education, and I don’t believe those programs are effective at all, but it sounds like OP is basically inventing an excuse to pretend Palin is a hypocrite.
There’s no grounds to criticize her for being inconsistent about these policies. She has acknowledged she could have had an abortion when she got pregnant with her son Trig at about age 44, and probably nobody would have known about it. If she wanted, she probably could have arranged a quiet abortion for Bristol when she got pregnant at age 17. Neither of these things happened, and there’s no reason to assume it would happen if Willow Palin got pregnant.
For that matter, it’s foolish to state or imply (as others did during the campaign fever) that having a pregnant daughter would somehow make her a hypocrite. Sarah Palin is a hypocrite if she preaches premarital abstinence but does not practice it. She’s not a hypocrite simply because she has a daughter who refused to follow that example.
Heck, it doesn’t even demonstrate that abstinence-only programs don’t work! It would demonstrate that these programs don’t have a 100% success rate, but the same can be said of “safe sex” programs. When someone gets pregnant despite the use of condoms and other contraceptives, we don’t go around saying that these programs are abysmal failures.
I’m not arguing for or against abstinence-only teaching, as that’s another subject altogether. The point is that all of this distaste toward Sarah Palin makes people react in irrational ways, such as inventing accusations of hypocricy or stating that a single failure in abstinence teaching automatically proves that her method just doesn’t work.
It’s questionable whether Palin’s beliefs about abstinence are as doctrinaire as they are generally portrayed. This article was written by a supporter, of course, but the various quotes and facts that it recounts can be judged for themselves. Certainly, it doesn’t appear that Bristol Palin received abstinence-only education in school.
True. There is some evidence that Bristol is a hypocrite on this issue, although I think it’s more likely she chose to become an abstinence advocate to help her mother’s next campaign. Regardless her views aren’t important.
No, there’s already a mountain of evidence for that. Not to hijack the thread in that direction, but it’s probably going to go there anyway…
I just want to know why people are still talking about Sarah Palin. Seriously. It’s over. She lost and went home. The only time the Palins still show up in the news is for trivial shit like, “Bristol Palin graduated high school!” Well, whoop de shit. I swear to God, I sometimes feel like I hear more in the news about Sarah Palin than Obama.
If by “went home,” you mean “is clearly planning to run for president again,” yes, she lost and went home. There’s no particular need to talk about the 2012 primaries and election at this point, but people can’t help themselves.
Unfortunately for me, I was better at it than most.
No, it’s not, because anecdotes are not data. People who get chemotherapy die of cancer. May we conclude the doctors who recommend chemotherapy are full of crap?
Or consider the reverse: if Bristol hadn’t gotten pregnant, and Palin had said, “My policies work – look at my daughter. She’s not pregnant!” would you have found that argument convincing?
Where did anyone get the impression that Bristol Palin is a product of “abstinence only” education?
She wasn’t. Her high school, like most, taught her all about contraception. She and boyfriend Levi Johnson DID use contraception… sometimes. Like many foolish teenagers, they knew exactly what they had to do to prevent a pregnancy. They either “forgot” or were too horny to take the time to do what they knew perfectly well how to do.
Bristol made a huge mistake, and is paying the price. But she is NOT paying the price becaue she was kept in the dark by religious fanatics.
I’m going to give this the benefit of the doubt and send it to IMHO as a poll rather than to the Pit. However, having read the OP several times, I still see no debate topic and none of the responses appear to be providing a topic, either.
Please, she can “run” for President all she wants. But she’s not even going to come within sniffing distance of a victory in the primaries, let alone the real election in November.
