Moving thread from IMHO to Great Debates.
I must agree with this. Wasn’t there an incident on Southwest Air, where an airline attendant told some black women “Eenie Meenie Minie Mo, pick a seat, we have to go?” and they got offended because it was racist?
The airline attendant was in her 20s, had most likely heard it as “Eenie Meenie Minie Mo, catch a tiger by the toe” and not the older, more racist version.
As a resident of Florida for my entire life, I can tell you that I have never heard of alligators eating slaves. Call me ignorant, call me ill-informed, whatever term you would like to use, DianaG, but just because YOU have heard of something as racist doesn’t mean the rest of us have. And considering the Univ of Florida Gators is a well known icon in this state, that would have been my first guess…the man was a Gator fan/alum.
My job has shown me that there is, indeed, a bunch of racism still out there.
There’s a debate? Looked pretty one sided to me. :dubious:
Sure they can. It just takes an entire book of them.

I really should not have clicked on that.

He wasn’t at a football game, or a college reunion, and he wasn’t there to represent the University of Florida. He was at a political convention, to represent Florida Republicans. When one is representing one’s political party, at a political convention, one should probably consider the *political *implications of one’s statements, whether verbal or sartorial.
I wonder if the McCain campaign made sure there weren’t any Muslim women in the photograph…
It looks like they filtered out anything that wasn’t old and white before they got through the door.
Personally, I think the gator hats are way funnier than the fake lips, and a racist angle would never have occured to me.
It was a FLORIDA delegation. Is it out of the realm of possibility that he wanted to stand out as being from FLORIDA by wearing something most Floridians would easily recognize?
Yeesh. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
Is it out of the realm of possibility that he knew exactly what he was doing?
Sometimes a spade is a spade.
I get it. All Republicans are evil racists and out to display their racism by whatever subtle means are necessary.
If you look for blue SUVs, you’re going to see them everywhere.
No, not all Republicans are evil racists. But there was nothing subtle about that.
If you want to insist that blue SUVs don’t exist, all you have to do is redefine “blue” and suddenly the world is full of teal and purple SUVs.

Same as Obama knew what he was saying. Not only did he call Palin a pig, but he called her smelly. See, her nickname is “Barracuda” and he followed calling her a pig by making a comment about a smelly fish in newspaper. Isn’t it OBVIOUS because, you see, she is a barracuda currently in the newspapers.
But I guess it only sounds stupid when Reps say stuff like that and when Dems say it it is insightful and truth-revealing.
Hey, did a blue SUV just go by?
Well, shit. If you’re reading that much into what he says, no wonder there’s a disconnect. You take your candidate’s stuff at face value and we take ours at face value. That’s fine, except our candidate really didn’t call yours a pig. Are you telling me that you’ve never heard the pig/lipstick similie before?
I don’t know what he’s telling you, but you seem to be telling us that you’re not aware of the connection between Florida and gators.
The juxtaposition of a black figure with an alligator is a common theme in vintage black americana.
