Panned Movies that You Actually Like

One of my favorite movies is Dutch, starring Ed O’Neill. I saw it in theaters 14 times, which is quite a trick when you realize it only lasted 10 days or so. The irony is that I only went to see it because the L.A. Times gave it a good review. Apparently that was the only good review it got.

Roger Ebert gave zero stars to North, Erik the Viking and The Doom Generation, all of which I liked.

Already mentioned (but worth mentioning again): Joe vs. the Volcano and Last Action Hero.

That was a pretty good movie.
I also liked Pushing Tin.

Going back a bit here–but Marooned.

I don’t know if this was panned when it came out, but considering it was savaged by Mystery Science Theater, the popular consensus must be that it’s a dog.

I like the film and have never watched MST3K’s version.

I liked North.

Kill me, now.

Another fan of the new Shaggy and Velma, here. Lillard is Shaggy. Mrs. Skeezix and I nearly had to be physically restrained, during the scene where Shaggy and Scooby are in the van, with smoke billowing out of the sun roof/vent. I thought I ruptured something.

Captain Ron and Monkeybone are both fun flicks, in my eyes, as well.

I don’t recall if this was panned, or just ignored, at the time, but I still have a big ole’ soft spot for Tron.

[sub]And I miss my Intellivision, now, too. Discs of Tron, and the Solar Sailer voice-module game sucked up a whole bunch of my free time, years ago.[/sub]

Oh yeah, I forgot Night of the Comet.

[sub]I know, you wish you could forget it, too.[/sub]

And, just to show my masochistic streak, I really dug Escape From L.A., too.

Another one for Monkeybone, Hudson Hawk (I LOVE Bruce Willis singing “Swinging on a Star”), and Cabin Boy. And then throw my vote in for Escape from L.A. Aside from the surfing scene, I consider it to be an amazingly stylistic movie with some really cool visuals and great characters.

Hey, Skeezix, shout out for ya: “Daddy would have gotten us Uzis.”

Yep, I kinda liked Scooby Doo too. And I own Kung Pow and Daylight on DVD.

My addition to the list: Cutthroat Island. It’s just got some of the coolest stuff ever put on film. How can you dislike a movie with a raging ship-to-ship cannon battle?

I like Waterworld. There. I said it. I even bought the DVD not long ago.

I, too, liked Death to Smoochie, Final Fantasy, Stuart Saves his Family, Last Action Hero, and Cabin Boy. I loves me some Cabin Boy.

I’ll add The Chase. Charlie Sheen. Henry Rollins, Flea, and wossisname from Red Hot Chili Peppers make cameos.

I got a copy of Lost in Space with my DVD player, and it’s not all that bad. The CGI monkey is evil and must die, but it was pretty neat over-all.

I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Gymkata. Not a good movie, by any means, but I couldn’t get enough of it when I was twelve. One of the finest karate gymnsat v. mob of crazy people fight scenes in Amercan cinematic history.

I’m going to make a prediction here that Pirates of the Carribean is going to be a bad movie that I’ll love. [sub]Zombie pirates! HOW CAN IT MISS![/sub]

Well, Treasure Planet got ignored by audiences and even the reviews suggesting you see it were tinged with distress at so many things you wonder why they recommend it in the end? But I absolutely loved it. It was funny. It was moving. It was very inventive, I loved the way they combined ships with sails with space travel. Morph was perfect. I generalize it that they were looking forward to ravaging this unconventional setting for Treasure Island. I feel so lucky I got to see it in an IMAX and I am waiting desperately for the DVD. Come on ABC, Jim at the Naval Academy would be a great series for prime time in the same vein as Star Trek.

I also really enjoyed Hudson Hawk and often sing that song.

Has nobody in Hollywood ever noticed that pirate movies just haven’t made it since Captain Blood? They seem to try every few years. It’s kind of depressing.

I suspect a conspiracy among overworked and underappreciated script readers, but that’s probably just paranoia on my part.

I’m not sure if these qualify, but I’d like to get a mention in:

“Up the Creek”

“Top Secret”

They used a recut version from Film Ventures International called “Space Travelers”. Chunks of plot are missing. It was not savaged they just ‘riffed’ on the actors and situations. It’s the best known movie ever on there by far.

For the OP… UHF.

Spies Like Us, and it’s gotten funnier since I’ve been working for the government.

I’ll second North (Elijah Wood rules the world, and Bruce Willis is his second-in-command), Last Action Hero, Waterworld and Pushing Tin. Was Pushing Tin panned? Why? It had both John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton, what’s not to like?

The aforementioned Joe Vs The Volcano
Clean Slate: for some reason I just found it very funny
Dante’s Peak: I’m a sucker for a disaster film
Armageddon: sure, the plot was idiotic, the science was made up and the schmaltz was palpable, but there was something about that one guy’s kid finding out who he was that made me like the movie.

I liked Popeye too, although the songs drag something fierce. And face it, Shelley Duvall was born to play Olive Oyl. Last time I watched it I noticed Dennis Franz in a bit part as well.

I dunno if this was panned, but I’ll mention Krull. Apart from a silly ending, I really enjoyed this film, especially the special effects and the bizarre alien castle. Liam Neeson has a minor role, as does Todd Carty (from Eastenders).

And I own Death to Smoochy on DVD. :o

Erik the Viking ROCKS!

The scene when the horn of the gods or whatever is finally correctly “blown” was a classic all by itself, plus the great scene when the king keeps refusing to believe the island is sinking into the sea was wonderful.

Also “Baron von Munchehousen” was fantastic. Watching this again I realized how much went into this fairy tale story, both in humour (Robin Williams in particular was really funny) and pathos. The death scenes were pretty fierce.

I also enjoyed Waterworld, The Postman, Dutch, Spies like us to mention some already brought up.

Has anyone seen the comedy “Once upon a Crime” - it got panned but I thought it was hilarious (especially John Candy as “Augie Morosco” and all the pointless lying to the police by every character (and the police guy pointing out the proof of the lie immediately thereafter).

Another strange comedy with Ed Oneil was “Disorganized Crime” - again not much at the box office but me and my crowd loved it - the scene where he loses his clothes crossing the river was classic!

Was “The Three Amigos” panned?
