Panned Movies that You Actually Like

Death to Smoochie… Lord help me…

I also like Dutch.

The (now) panned movie that I like is Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. What can I say? I love dinosaurs!

I’m sure I’ll think of many films that fit this category eventually, but the one that comes to mind now?

I thought Sylvester Stallone’s “Oscar” was hilarious.

Forgot about Dante’s Peak and The Last Action Hero. I paid to see Dante 5 times!

hrh

I didn’t even realize that Stallone’s Oscar was panned. I loved that movie, but I suppose movie critics have it in for Stallone in general.

Along that same line, I don’t think that anything that Norm MacDonald does will ever be be praised by critics. For instance, I loved Dirty Work, but it was one of the few movies I liked that got a 0% from Rotten Tomatoes. Norm is a pretty funny guy, but not a box office draw.

I also liked Romeo is Bleeding, but this got savaged by critics too. It was kind of dark and surreal, which threw off some reviewers, but I thought the story and soundtrack were fantastic. I became a jazz fan because of this movie.

Also, Stargate was a movie that I liked which scored 0% on Rotten Tomatoes (and I usually agree with these guys!).

And, sue me, but Ace Ventura 2 cracked me up!

I enjoyed most of the movies that everyone has posted. To add a few others, I also really liked:

Mallrats (why this has such a bad rep, I don’t know)
Return of the Killer Tomatoes (Really cheesy, but funny)
Mr Deeds (Adam Sandler version…I know, I know…shoot me now)

My addition to the list: Cutthroat Island. It’s just got some of the coolest stuff ever put on film. How can you dislike a movie with a raging ship-to-ship cannon battle? **

I kept asking myself that during the whole movie: “How can I dislike a movie with a raging ship-to-ship cannon battle”? But I managed it easily. I think it had to do with the leaden way every single piece of dialog plunged to the ground like a 24 pound round shot dropped from the mizzen.
I will second Return of the Killer Tomatos. Not only because the female lead was incredibly cute, but because the final shaggy dog joke was so horrible:
Once she’s been gassed, she’ll never be a real tomato again.

*Would you like to swing on a star?
Carry moonbeams home in a jar?
And be better off than you are?

You can be better than you are
You could be swingin’ on a star*

Another vote for Hudson Hawk

If “Three Amigos” wasn’t panned it should have been. (IMHO)

On the other hand, just watched the video of “Spies Like Us” and it had some really funny bits.

ahem …

McHale’s Navy, with Tom Arnold and Bruce Campbell

just pit me now.

Although it wasn’t panned across the board I notice a distinct hatred for it on this board:

I really liked Titanic, no so much for the story or anything, but I thought it was a fantastic looking film. And the oily bad-guy is the role Billy Zane was born to play. (Although if memory serves, he already played it in The Rocketeer.)

I also loved Stuart Saves his Family and North.

I HATED Hudson Hawk when it came out (mainly because Sandra Bernhard was in it.) I’d probably like it if I saw it now though.

Timothy Dalton was the bad guy in the Rocketeer.

The Avengers, and not just for Uma Thurman’s outfit.

I liked Costner’s The Postman. I can’t make up my mind if I like it straight-up or for its campiness, but hardly anyone i know likes it in either of those ways.

It also had Angelina Jolie looking better than she ever had before and ever has since, IMNSHO.

I have a thing for tongue-in-cheek movies - so I will second/third/whatever the following:

  • ** Monkeybone**
  • ** Bedazzled ** (yeah, I got a thing for Brendan Fraser)
  • ** Last Action Hero**
  • ** Top Secret** (Val Kilmer before his ego-trip)
  • ** Oscar **

One of my personal favorites that noone seems to know about: Toys - almost TOO whimsical.

Hysterical (1983).
It’s supposed to be a comedy. It stars the Hudson Brothers, if anyone remembers them, and boasts a supporting cast inexplicably rich in star power-- Julie Newmar, Richard Kiel, John Larroquette, and others. Charlie Callas does a cameo as Dracula. No one I’ve ever met has found this movie even the least bit amusing–and yet, I am unaccountably delighted by it. I have no explanation for this. “Pull your pants up, Fritz.”

Put me down for another shameless fan of Death to Smootchie and Stuart Saves His Family.
I’m not sure that Pushing Tin was panned-I think it just didn’t do that great at the box office.

Why, thank you! Thank you very much! I didn’t realize I’d made such an impression on this board that quickly . . .

It kind of annoys me sometimes that so many people will condemn a movie as being bad (or praise it as being genius) JUST BECAUSE of its popularity, or because of reviews. or even worse, because of popular belief.

There is no shame in liking or disliking a movie that other people say the opposite about. Really.

I love North, I hate The Big Lebowski. Can’t we all just get along?
