Siskel and Ebert HATED “Heaven’s Gate” but I adored the whole thing. A masterpiece. I have no idea why they hated it.
Well let me throw in Swordfish. I liked more than just for Halle Berry’s, errr, ummm, talented performance. I thought it was just enough over-the-top fun.
I think the reviews for Pushing Tin can be most accurately described as ‘mixed’. Rotten Tomatoes has it on the rotten side of the line, but there were plenty of favourable reviews, as well. Personally, I loved it, but that’s just me, and I have a crush on John Cusack so I’m incredibly biased.
Oh, Christ, I, too, loved Oscar, UHF, McHale’s Navy, Dante’s Peak, and Cutthroat Island… I must have the shittiest taste in movies…
But just to add one more to the list: Gone Fishin’. Low-impact buddy movie starring Danny Glover and Joe Pesci. A GREAT film!
2trew you just had to mention pirate movies didn’t ya?
ok I know I’ll be walkin’ th’ plank fer this one mateys.
Yellowbeard
[Blind Pew]
Dan’s comin’…
<listens>
Readin’, as usual.
[/Blind Pew]
Yeah, that goes on the list, too. Along with Flash Gordon.
[sub]Long live Flash. You’ve saved your “Earth.” Have a nice day.[/sub]
Yellowbeard was panned? It’s a masterpiece! Who would dare pan such a thing?
I don’t think it was unanimously panned but it certainly had mixed reviews and I’ve never personally met anyone else who liked it but I really enjoyed Mystery Men.
Simone with Al Pacino
Damn you Skeezix , I get nearly all the way to the end of this thread and think I will be the first to mention the 1980 film version of Flash Gordon. But nooooooooo, you have to beat me to it by four posts.
“Keeping our word is what makes us better than you”(Dale Arden)
The Fifth Element was panned so badly that I didn’t see it for years. One day I was in the library and there it was, so I borrowed it. Loved it. Funny, clever, and pretty original.
Also, didn’t Bladerunner get panned when it first came out? That’s my favorite movie of all time.
Was that movie panned? I thought it was funny and I still get the “Everything is Food” song stuck in my head at times.
Exorcist II: The Heretic
Bedazzled cracks me up every time. I think Brendan Fraser plays that role perfectly, and I enjoy the pop-ups at the beginning and end describing people. OK, I also enjoy Elizabeth Hurley and her outfits.
The Fifth Element - I didn’t realize it was panned, but it’s worth the time I’ve wasted on it.
Definitely Night of the Comet, but also My Chaffeur, a delightful little romp that includes Penn and Teller’s film debut.
The Cable Guy
The Cable Guy is one of the most underrated and misunderstood movies. I love this movie. It’s hilarious. I love the subject it tackles, that uncomfortable line of friendship between guys that happens when one guy feels too close. We’ve all had that friend in grade school or high school that you knew from school but he always bugged you to hang out or to sleep over. You never think about that guy though, he’s just lonely and wants a friend but he just doesn’t have good social skills. I’ve known many people like matthew broderick’s character who say they your friend but only hang out with you when they need something or they don’t have their girlfriend anymore so suddenly your an instant best friend. So anyway, I like the movie a lot.
Jim
I second Bladerunner. It was panned when it was released but it was one of the most visionary sci-fi movies ever.
Dune also got panned but I always loved it.
OK, someone has to say it…purely for the comedy mind you:
Showgirls
The Shoveler: If we had a billionaire like Lance Hunt as our benefactor…
Mr. Furious: That’s because Lance Hunt is Captain Amazing
The Shoveler: Don’t start that again. Lance Hunt wears glasses. Captain Amazing doesn’t wear glasses!
Mr. Furious: He takes them off when he transforms.
The Shoveler: That doesn’t make any sense, he wouldn’t be able to see.
The Sphinx: You must be like wolf pack, not six-pack.
Shoveler: God’s given me a gift. I shovel well. I shovel very well.
And many more - Mystery Men is a hoot.
Speaking of Penn and Teller…Howz 'bout Penn and Teller Get Killed?
I still have the laserdisc!
One word: Gia. 'Nuff said.
I’ll add to the Hudson Hawk pile-on. I really liked it. And, Godzilla (1998), even though Broderick usually makes me cringe. Of course, I also like him in The Night We Never Met.
