I have to admit that despite being a U2 fan and knowing “Mysterious Ways” I had a WTF moment when I read Ellen’s post because I was thinking the title was a play on Jimi Hindrix and I saw nary a U2 reference in the OP so “On your knees” came out of nowhere.

She was responding to something the OP wrote in both the thread title and his sig. It’s true that wasn’t the thread topic, but that’s a very liberal definition of “had nothing to do with the thread.” And of course unlike Nunzio Tavulari, she wasn’t insulting anyone to prove some point.
That’s a very liberal definition of “insult”.
I think “suck my left one” is pretty recognizably an insult.

You have signatures turned off, then. No great loss, but as discussed upthread, Cartooniverse’s sig is a quote from U2’s “Mysterious Ways.” Ellen Cherry’s post is the very next line in the song. On topic? Not especially, but not wrong or out of left field or insulting in any way.
There’s no way those lyrics can be taken as an insult. Less so than “on your knees boy”. Are you simply responding to the fact that there are naughty words there?
After all the flap recently about sexist comments, are you really going to say that “on your knees boy” is, absent an obvious reference, not at least questionable? If it had been a man saying “on your knees bitch”, would it have been equally acceptable?
Sure it’s questionable. It’s also a different issue as there was an obvious reference. It’s hardly her fault if some people have chosen to hide signatures.

I thought Ellen Cherry was parodying the recent kerfuffle about sexual jokes, and was adopting a jocular role as dominatrix. Cartooniverse offers to kiss moderator’s ass, and Ellen Cherry tells him to go ahead, in a sort of dominating way.
We need some kind of safe word on the SDMB, to turn that sort of thing off.

I’m not sure what to say at this point other than “OK, that’s your opinion.” If you go around telling people “suck my left one,” they will almost certainly be offended (as long as they think you’re referring to your own anatomy, at least), and if you post it in a thread here it’s very likely you’ll get a warning for insults.

You feel the equivalent of “boy” is “bitch,” not “girl?” Interesting. I think we’ve now reached the point where this is too dumb to keep dealing with. Which means we actually got there several posts ago - but this is the end.
Oh and just to point out, I think given the circumstances there were a few reasons why it was rightfully not modded. Getting on his knees to kiss her ass + the U2 references. I just wanted to say that out of context and given the current contraversy it was a very WTF reference and my first reaction was what if the OP responded “Gladly”? Then who was harrassing whom? :dubious:
Yeah, I think I’ll catch you guys on the flip side. Marley, thanks for trying. This message board has become more unpleasant than not lately. I still find it hard to believe that so much whining and outrage and complaining has come from some fairly clear and well-thought-out guidelines on sexual harassment, but here we are.
