Terrible modding in ATMB

Colibri is very upset and decides to do what he does best, mod poorly. There were other people discussing the same issue and responding with the poster who was warned (twice) but didn’t even get a note.

Colibri is upset because the board is performing poorly and people in that thread were making fun of him for understating the problem, and then someone raises an issue which he has been having dificult modding (surprise) so he vents a little frustration. Because all good modding is done that way.

It was a perfectly legit warning for hijacking and picking at a sore subject already discussed for way too long.

I think both of Colibri’s warnings were spot on. Marley asked posters not to mention the misogyny issue until the mods came back with a ruling. Red Fury not only made off topic remarks which had nothing to do with the thread but his “butthurt Panamanians” remark clearly was meant as a personal attack on Colibri. Good on him, and not terrible modding at all, IMO.

Agreed, it was appropriately moderated. However, sorry, but I laughed out loud on the Panamanian insult. But yes, Colibri was in the right here.

Marley gave that instruction in a different thread. It is unreasonable to presume that instruction has been seen by all posters and holds for all threads.

Worst band name ever.

Here’s what Marley posted when he closed the misogyny clarification thread:
I realize there are a lot of people with questions about this, but none of them are going to be answered by people screaming at each other and calling names. I’m closing this thread. Perhaps the mods will start a new one to explain some of these issues in a calm and reasonable manner.
That reads to me like “this thread has gotten off the rails, so I’m closing it. Maybe we’ll open a new one later.” It does not read to me like “please do not mention this issue again until we say so”.

And given the fact that two other posters were already riffing on gender/women before RedFury posted and the whole thread was rife with off-topic remarks and joking, I’m not really seeing how the initial warning was at all justified. Yes, RedFury behaved badly after that, but when the cops kick down the wrong guy’s door and tackle him in his pajamas, I tend to cut him some slack for cussing at them.

This is of course nonsense. I closed the thread because it was being hijacked by RedFury, and because the recent connectivity issues had apparently been resolved. If someone actually wishes to discuss the board performance issues further, they are welcome to start a new thread in ATMB.

I did not understate the problem. I merely pointed out that not everyone was having the same connectivity problems, and that there was no reason to inconvience everyone just because some people were have problems, as Anonymous User suggested. The board was taken down later when staff were available to fix the problem.

A couple of other people in that thread, in particular kayaker, probably also deserved moderator notes for off-topic remarks about what has recently been a rather inflammatory board issue. In fact, I at first let RedFury’s “hysterical Man-Woman” post slide. But when he explicitly brought up misogyny, it was clear that he was making reference to the controversy. That’s what got him the first warning. Rather than just “responding to a comment riffing on the misogyny issue,” as he claimed, he was upping the ante.

Pfffft. If anything, those warnings were overdue. When it comes to jumping into interesting discussions with poorly-thought out and inflammatory comments, RedFury is something of a repeat offender.

Here’sMarley’s instruction about not starting new threads on the subject. But even without this instruction, RedFury’s posts were out of line. He was aware that it was a controversial issue since he had participated in other threads on the subject, and his behavior was significantly worse and more explicitly about the issue than the others posting in the thread in which he received the warnings.

Redfury did not post in the thread in which the “instruction” was given. You can’t expect every poster to read every capriciously locked thread in ATMB. If you’re going to start passing out warnings for new rules, you really need to publicize those rules before enforcement. Participating in other threads on the subject, which do not contain the ill-conceived “instruction”, does not fairly impute knowledge of the “instruction.”

But it wasn’t a new thread created for that subject. The rule, as stated, was not violated.

As I said, RedFury’s posts were out of line even if he never saw the instruction. My first warning did not make reference to Marley’s instruction in that thread. I issued further instructions to drop the hijack in that warning, which RedFury ignored.

And? Asking posters not to start new ATMB threads is still quite a ways away from cochrane’s claim that Marley asked posters not to mention the misogyny issue at all. Are you now asserting that you warned RedFury for violating the moderator instructions Marley issued in that post? If so, how do his posts fall under the “don’t start new threads” instruction? And do you honestly think the best way to issue moderator instructions for all posters is at the end of locked threads? Why not just post a new thread outlining what you’re asking people to do while you deliberate?

As for his behavior being “significantly worse”, can you clarify? The fact that it made you mad does not automatically make it a rules violation. You’re a mod, this is the forum for discussing board rules and mod actions – people are sometimes going to say critical things that make you mad. If you’re going to issue warnings for that, at least change the forum description to read “For all fawning questions, positive comments and compliments about the SDMB. This is also the place for test threads, provided they are sufficiently complimentary.”

So is there a new rule yet or not… I’m getting excited!!!

I can’t stand the mods here. They think they’re so cool with their fashions, beat music, and motor scooters. Go back to 1960s London the whole lot of you.

I agree - bad modding. No hijacking took place. It’s a bad notion in the first place to make an entire topic off-limits in every forum in every thread until some such vague time in the future after mods have finished discussing it. And to disallow any joking about said situation in a forum designed for such topics.

Please, they were practically the platonic ideal of jerkish comments.

If you want to nitpick, he violated my own instructions not to hijack the thread further. Neither warning was dependent on Marley’s instructions.

His behavior was significantly worse than kayaker’s in that he made it explicit that he was referring to the misogyny issue. As I said, others in that thread probably should have received at least mod notes.

Along with kayaker, you probably deserved a mod note in that thread as well. This forum is intended for discussion of board issues, not for joking. And it’s especially not intended for so-called “jokes” on topics that have been the subject of a great deal of recent inflammatory discussion.
