Parents - Tell me about young kids wearing glasses

Our lad is 14 months and we’ve just been told he needs to wear glasses. He has a slight squint, and is long sighted, and the glasses are apparently the first step in correcting both of these conditions.

Getting a baby to wear glasses sounds like a nightmare, frankly. He won’t wear a hat for longer than 2 minutes. Does anyone have any experience of their youngsters needing glasses at such a young age - how did it go?

My sister was born with a lazy eye and wore prism glasses from toddlerhood forward to correct it. I don’t recall that it was a big struggle. She WAS older than 14 months, though.

Good luck! I know it sounds odd to have a child that young in glasses, but it can be done.

My kids don’t wear glasses, but this site might help you out.

My younger sister also had a lazy eye as toddler and had to wear glasses (very thick back then). She had wrap-around-the-whole-ear frame holders, and plastic lenses.

Today, the frames for kids glasses are usually made of bendy metal that doesn’t break (unlike the old hard plastic frames), and the glasses themselves should be unbreakable plastic, of course.

As for the kid not wanting it - well, I don’t remember that coming up, it was “you have to wear the glasses the whole day, end of discussion” my parents said. (Similar, my father never started the car unless we were all belted in, and said so several times.)

Our son got glasses not long after he turned 3 years old due to severe nearsightedness. He never had a problem wearing them since they helped him see so much better.

Now when the pediatric ophthalmologist tried to get him, at age 4, into gas permeable contact lenses… yikes! Not good.

That won’t work so well for a one year old, I’m afraid.

I suggest easing the baby into it. Have him wear them for a few minutes as you actively distract him (playing, singing, something that keeps his hands busy). Do this multiple times a day extending the time of each play session. You can even have a special set of toys or books (maybe a basket of toys) that you pull out for when it’s glasses time. Soon, he’ll be comfortable wearing them.
