Parliament/Funkadelic - where do I start?

I’m a little late to the game but I saw George Clinton and Parliament on an old Jools Holland show and really liked the music.

There are (of course) lots of albums - which one is good one to start with (for a beginner)?

Thanks!

One Nation Under a Groove

Flashlight is one of the funkentelechyest songs ever.

For Clinton on his own: Atomic Dog.

One of the most popular songs in clubs in the 80s. Along with Egypt Egypt by Egyption Lover.

Techno and funk mix well for dance clubs.

BTW, exept for the first, all of my posts are single songs. ONUaG is a song AND an album.

I’ll second One Nation Under a Groove.

Not only, that; I think I’ll go play it now!

I’m going to suggest you start in Café Society.

If you want to hear more things like what you heard on Jools Holland, I’d recommend Mothership Connection and/or Funkentelechy Vs. The Placebo Syndrome.

If you want to hear what Parliament evolved out of, and want some more rock in your funk, I’d recommend Maggot Brain by Funkadelic.

If you can’t get enough and want to hear what Parliament evolved into, I’d recommend P-Funk All StarsUrban Dancefloor Guerrillas.

And yeah, if that’s still not enough and you want to hear what the old man can do on his own, I’d point you at George Clinton’s Computer Games, which features the song Atomic Dog.

Welcome to the party!

Thanks Guys!

Hearing Maggot Brain live was a concert highlight I still rave about.

While the previous recommendations are excellent, mine lean more in the psychedelic direction:

Maggot Brain.

Superstupid.

Funky Dollar Bill.

Cosmic Slop.

Tales of Kidd Funkadelic.

Funkentelechy.

Sometimes your feel like dancing, sometimes you feel like tripping.

Music threads are best suited to Cafe Society. I’ve relocated this one.

In addition to everything else, I’d also recommend Uncle Jam Wants You. And if anything, just for the sheer heaven of a funk/soul workout that is “(Not Just) Knee Deep”. Every last single second of its fifteen minutes really and seriously needs to be heard…no abbreviated version of “Knee Deep” will ever, EVER do.

Although, this almost, ALMOST does it…and because it includes a quite smoking version of the blistering guitar solo (heard from 6:59-9:43 on the original), as well as a nifty horn section at the end.

You can also cheat and just grab a Greatest Hits package, then hone in from there.

I love One Nation as the song. But i could never hear the rest of the songs on the album. Maggot Brain is a classic Funkadelic track.

Was the album broken?

My favorite of Funkadelic’s original albums is America Eats Its Young (1972), but a good place to start with Funkadelic would be this collection of the A-sides and B-sides of their singles from 1969-1976 called Music For Your Mother:

One Nation Under a Groove was the next album post-1976.
