Part time casual prostitution?

I can’t remember the cite but awhile ago I read somewhere about the history of Las Vegas that mentioned “teachers and secretaries” driving to LV on weekends to pick up a little extra money. Is there really any substantial number of women who occasionally work as prostitutes but not full time?

It’s unlikely. Here’s a very informative article on prostitution in Nevada:

Can you point to a place in that article that backs up the assertion that the OP’s premise is “unlikely”? (I didn’t read all of it, but I read/scanned through and didn’t notice any part that did)

I say it’s unlikely because of the risk involved. Did it ever happen? Sure, it probably did, but I seriously doubt that it was ever a common occurence, as the OP implies. In addition to the LV police, the casino security would be looking for this kind of activity. If a high roller in LV wanted a prostitute, I’m sure they could find one, w/ the casino’s tacit approval, but they’re not going to permit amateurs to ply their trade.

Who says they have to pick up tricks in casinos? Why can’t they just do what all the other “escorts” do and put out a bunch of explicit ads (whether on flyers, in the phone book, or even on craigslist) and only answer their phones / set appointments on the weekends, or whenever they feel like it?

Well, many strippers will “turn a trick” if the price is high enough/they need the money bad enough and sometime the cuteness of the guy figures in.

But women from LA driving to LV to turn a couple tricks? :dubious:

You do know that even an escort isn’t guarenteed to get a bunch of “calls” even over a Saturday night, right? And that they do not nessesarily do intercourse? I used to know a couple of students who worked as “out call private dancers”. They were *not *hookers as some think all “outcall private shows/escorts” are- they put on a sexy show. For a mild tip you might get them to use a dildo on themself, or maybe a lapdance, or for a decent amount you could get a “full contact” lapdance, which comes *very *close to actual sex (and might cross the line legally, IANAL) , but none I knew would actually have sex (Oral, Vaginal or anal) for just a guy who called them. Pretty wild and sexy time, sure.

I make sexy time! Wawawewa! I like!

Are you sure they were driving to LV to work as prostitues, rather than as strippers/dancers? It’s my understanding that prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas itself. Which is not to say they couldn’t be doing it less-than-legally, but that could happen anywhere, and I imagine it would be hard to find out how often it happens.

My sociology professor in college told us that during big weekends at the university, including homecoming, football weekends, etc., he knew of a couple women in administrative positions at the school that would pick up extra cash from the visiting dads and alum and such.

Administrative assistant by day, sex toy by night. Just the stuff of a good Penthouse letter.

I’d say about 1/4 th of the times I walk through a Vegas Casino on the strip after midnight alone or with one other guy I get hit on by a hooker.

It ain’t rare.

Just a quick glance through the internet, and it seems there’s already a website adultwork.com, which caters towards these sorts of sexual dilettantes. Also, browsing through the erotic section on Craigslist, there seem to be a number of girls who only offer their services on weekends, or advertise that they’re “just in town for a couple of days,” which would lead me to assume they do it more on a part-time basis. I think it would be difficult to get the firm stats, but, I mean, there certainly are call girls who are students by day and ply their trade by night or on weekends, at least (that was not uncommon in Budapest.)

Are they a “substantial number”? I don’t know. But they are out there.

Not in Las Vegas, but this is common in Cuba. In Havana and other big tourist cities like Holguin you will find girls that are professional in that that is their only job, but you will also find many, many others who are only doing it for a chance at a nightlife, and some cash of course.

And maybe addicts too. Has there ever been a study on what percentage of prostitutes are addicts?

LV casinos are not going to tolerate hookers solicting business on their premisis, for two good reasons:

  1. They will not put their gaming license at risk.
  2. For the last decade, or so, LV has been trying to sell itself as a family vacation destination, tourists are the business and casinos are not going to jeopordize that.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time in LV casinos, starting in the sixties and as recent as a few years ago. I’ve never been propositioned by a hooker. I’ve chatted up a number of women during those excursions, but I’ve never been asked to pay to play.

Las Vegas has, mostly, given up it’s “family” push, instead opting to go with their “What happens here, stays here” advertising campaign. While there are still plenty of family things to do in Las Vegas, for the most part, that boat has sailed, and it left things like MGM’s “amusement part” in its wake.

I’m not sure it’s been mentioned, but a number of the workers at brothels OUTSIDE of Las Vegas are weekend-only. I would, based on their pay, that most of them don’t hold low-paying weekday jobs Mon-Fri though.

I believe you on that, but nobody specified girls plying their trade on premises. Besides, if you were to freelance, wouldn’t you go the higher paying call girl route, rather than trying to pick up some johns at the casino? I know I would.

Sex, or drug?

Drugs. I doubt if too many prostitutes do it for reasons other than money.

Pardon my naivete, but is a “full contact lap dance” what I saw in the twenty minutes I could stand of Showgirls? IIRC, she essentially ground herself against the customer, who (I believe) reached orgasm from the friction. Or is that a regular lap dance?

I don’t know the gradations, perhaps fortunately.

Regards,
Shodan

I’ve never seen Showgirls, but I assume by “full contact lapdance,” it’s meant that one is allowed to touch the girls, lick the girls, and that sort of thing. My experience with strip clubs is very limited, but generally touching the girls is not allowed. This varies wildly depending on where you’re at. In Budapest, for example, everything was full contact. In New Orleans, the place I visited was no touching (at least of private areas). It is my understanding that this is how most strip clubs in the US are.
