When Macnee’s death was announced, I had the usual moment of brain lapse. See, I always confused Patrick Macnee with Patrick Magee, another famous British actor, namewise.
It always takes me a bit: Macnee = The Avengers, Magee = A Clockwork Orange, Marat/Sade*, Chariots of Fire, etc.
When I read this thread, I wondered at the time if they ever did anything together. Checking IMDb revealed that Magee appeared on two episodes of The Avengers.
Anyway, one of those episodes, The Gilded Cage, was on a retro station last weekend and I got around to watching it last night. Quite interesting seeing them together. But wait, there’s more:
Magee was in a wheelchair, as he was in A Clockwork Orange. At least Macnee didn’t start doing Singing in the Rain.
Also: The plot revolved around a gold heist, and Steed’s partner, Catherine Gale, needed to study up on gold matters. A bunch of stuff about Fr. Knox, how the fixed price of gold was a boon to Indian gold smugglers, etc. Gale was played by Honor Blackman, a.k.a. Pussy Galore from Goldfinger.
All in all, it felt at times like I was watching some sort of Avengers/Kubrick/James Bond mashup.
