Patrick Ramsey got a raw deal in Washington.

I thought the Washington Redskins ran a really good draft in 2002. They traded their 1st round pick down several times, earned lots of extra draft picks, and still managed to draft a very decent QB at the very end of the round.

Patrick was a rough kid. He stood up behind that pourous offensinve line for two years and got seriously banged around. But he held in there. He showed he had a toughness. Those were a rough two seasons, but it’s okay because he proved that he was bad ass enough to start.

Then Snyder hired Joe Gibbs. Everyone knows that Joe likes a wily old veteran QB. Someone who’s been around a while and has playoff experience. Brunell comes in, is the starter by default, out goes young Patrick. But that’s okay, because now he can learn for a year or two behind Brunell while getting tutored for the starting job by his 5th year. He’ll be the franchise quarterback, especially after Brunell starts sucking it up and throwing INT after INT. Ramsey goes in and starts playing well.

He’s the starter all that offseason, until he gets hurt halfway throught he 2nd quarter. He doesn’t start for the Redskins again.

And he won’t ever again, either. He’s gone for just a 6th round pick.

I’d like to pit Joe Gibbs for not letting this kid get a chance, but he’s pit-proof. I’d like to pit Dan Snyder for this, but that’s passe. Instead, I’ll just say this whole situation stinks and that when Ramsey becomes the starter for the Jets, I’ll probably buy one of his jerseys.

I think Ramsey will do better with the Jets. He’s got a cannon for an arm, but he needs a good offensive line. He was getting clobbered in D.C.

I agree he was treated somewhat unfairly, but I think it’ll work out for him ih the long run. Assuming he stays healthy, he may well become one of the all-time great QB’s in the league. It was silly to let him go for a sixth round draft pick though. Was that all the 'skins got for him?

Especially considering the Philadelphia Eagles got a 2nd rounder from the Dolphins for A.J. Feely.

Hehe, little Danny Snider and his flavor of the year. He’s run so many players out, Arrington, Stephen Davis, most of the Jets he’s plundered…

I agree that Ramsey was treated pretty poorly by Redskins management. But here’s something that I get hung up on: Gibbs does like the cagey vet at QB. That explains bringing in Brunell. But it doesn’t explain drafting Jason Campbell. Ramsey is the prototypical Gibbs QB: big, cannon arm, not terribly mobile. Ramsey has already proved he is tough, and can play in this league. I wonder what Gibbs saw to make him not want someone who seemed to be the ideal Gibbs QB. Ramsey did everything right, always put the team first, etc. It makes me wonder why Gibbs didn’t like him.

When will teams learn? I don’t care how much you need one, you can’t use a high draft pick on a QB then waste him by sticking behind a crappy offensive line so he gets sacked five times a game for the next three years. Same thing is happening in Texas with David Carr. Build a good line, THEN get the QB so he can get up to speed without getting gunshy in the pocket. Bah.

I think Gibbs’ M.O. is to use lots of weird formations, motion, etc., and he uses a pretty complex offense. Ramsey might not have been mentally up to it.

He sure seemed to be doing fine the second half of 2004 when the team had a winning record with him starting. Also, I remember when he was drafted, they talked all day long about how smart he was. Double major in Accounting and Business, or some such combo.

A smart, tough QB who can stand in there and deliver the ball when he has 260 linebackers running right at him doesn’t come around every day, and we just traded one for a 6th round pick.

Make that “260 pound linebackers”. That way it’ll make sense.

:smack:

Well, it worked for Eli. Interestingly, Eli was finally put in because of the crappy line. Kurt Warner was handing out sacks like candy. Then Eli came in and the sacks dried up. Anyway…

I am seriously pissed for Patrick. I was always a fan of his, despite him playing for a division rival. Mostly I think that I like him because of how much I truly despised Steve Superior and his gratingly blase attitude about the NFL. His QB carousel did more to stunt Ramsey’s career than all the sacks Gibbs let him suffer.

Ramsey has been used and abused by the Redskins his entire career. I wish him nothing but success with Gang Green, and that’s not just because I’m a fan of the Jets.

Accounting and Finance actually, and he even graduated early. He was also a javelin thrower in high school and college whcih helps account for the cannon he has for an arm. Smarts wasn’t his problem, the oranization was. Spurrier scrambled his football knowledge all up, and then once he got stuff back together under Gibbs, the Skins had managed to reanimate Brunell and had drafted Cambell. That made Ramsey the proverbial 3rd nipple, interesting but essentially unnecessary. Redskins fans will look back on losing Ramsey like we threw the baby out with the bathwater. I wish him well, and Jason Cambel had damned better be a decent QB.
