OK, we did this last season and I think we’ve got enough skins fans kickin’ around to make it work again.
Let’s talk about Washington DC’s favorite distraction (until the mid-term elections, at least): pro football!
So how about it?
Will Patrick Ramsey sign?
Who should be the starting QB?
What did everyone think of that first pre-season game?
Me:
Of course he will. But he won’t start this year.
Sage Rosenfels. What the hell. We already know what we’ve got with Mathews and (shudder) Wuerffel. Why not give the guy with undetermined upside a shot? Hell, Wuerffel couldn’t even make it in New Orleans! Agh!
Not a real test but encouragin as all get out. With any luck it’ll take opposing coaches a while to adapt to Spurrier’s all-or-nothing offense.
Yeah, yeah…whynt’cha Iggles fans go start your own thread.
Which reminds me, where the hell is Montfort? Has Anniz lured him overseas, only to abduct him, repeatedly abuse him sexually, then dump his body in a rarely-visited fjord?
Now, on to the Redskins:
I’m clueless on (1), (2), and (3) alike. The latest turn in the negotiations makes no sense to me, I didn’t see Saturday/Sunday’s game since it wasn’t on broadcast TV, and at least at the college level, it’s clear that QBs can thrive on Spurrier’s system that might not adapt well to your normal offense.
The big question is still how this offense will work in the NFL regular season. At least the preseason game the other night gave some modest assurances in that direction. But the absence of any proven players on offense (other than Stephen Davis, who doesn’t exactly seem to be key there) worries me. This team could be 12-4 or 4-12, and I have no clue whatsoever.
Well, just read the Playboy season preview and an article about Spurrier in the same issue.
The sum of the article was not to count out Sprrier no matter howhopeless it seems.
Yet, their prognosticators put the 'Skins at 8-8 at the end of this season.
As for starting QB, I think that Spurrier has too much of a history with Wuerffel and I think that the coach is going to want to start him. Although, Spurrier’s got a history of sticking it to whomever has failed him or turned their back on him in the past, so Wuerffel might be holding a clipboard rather than a football this season.
Jesus, the Philly weirdos are coming out of the woodwork!
I admit, I’ve no idea where they’ll finish this year. With another new coach and system and the crazed team personality they’ve had recently who can tell.
Wueffel He has been underrated for a while, not allowed much playing time, and in New Orleans Under Ditka he did not have a supporting cast worth a crap. (also see below)
Spurrier showed he can and will throw the ball and use the talents of his QB’s to the best of their talents.
Wueffel Did damn well in the preseason both in camp and in the first preseason. He is not the greatest QB for most systems, but He knows Spurriers system well and can pull it off with a talented defense coached by the best Defensive Coordinator, and a nice solid RB in Stephan Davis.
Will they beat Philly for the div? I do not see it happening this year. But, a few key injuries and the sky is the limit.
Of course, they have the Cards in the first week, and I have a sneaking suspision the Cards could suprise everyone and win an opener.
The Redskins’ season-opening win seemed like an excellent excuse to revive this thread.
31 years ago, George Allen came to town, bringing a whole bunch of his former players with him. He started off on the right foot with a 24-17 win over the Cardinals, commencing a winning tradition that would last for two decades.
Several months ago, Steve Spurrier came to town, bringing a number of his former players along. Today, won his first game as an NFL coach when the Redskins beat the Cardinals, 31-23.
I’m not expecting miracles, but I certainly wouldn’t complain if the analogy didn’t stop with today’s game.
I was impressed with the Cards actually. They scored 23 points on a very talented Defense. They have a very young defence who did well, give them a few years and Coach Mc will have them running.
I wonder if Spurrier is going to offer a draft pick and get Chandler the spare kicker from the 49ers. Who is another former Gator.
The Redskins look to make their division an interesting one to watch. I am looking forward to Spurrier testing his Offense against Dallas and Philly.
Nothing makes me nervous and irritable like seeing (or hearing, since I didn’t have it on TV–had to listen over the internet) the Redskins nearly screw up another game against the Cards.
And nothing makes me giggle and praise Joe Diety like them finishing the game off strong.

Now, somebody please explain to me why we don’t have a backup kicker…and who’s going to be doing it next week?
Usually the punter doubles as a backup placekicker.
IIRC, most teams used to have one person handling all the punting/placekicking chores, until George Allen decided that the roles were important enough to use a roster spot for each one, and everyone else ultimately followed. So it doesn’t seem like it’s asking a lot to expect your punter to be able to handle kickoffs and extra-point kicks in an emergency.
Anyway, I’m just delighted to see Spurrier’s offense work in a regular-season game; up until now, the omens looked promising, but they didn’t mean anything. This may have been “just the Cardinals”, but it was a bona fide NFL game. And if anything, the offense got better as the game went on.
Next week, of course, we’ll see how it works against one of the NFL’s most formidable defenses. And it goes without saying that McNabb will test the defense a bit more than Plummer did. If they win next Monday night, I’ll be dancing in the street. I’ll be quite happy for now if they just show that they belong on the same field with the Eagles.
