Skins reportedly give up 3 1st rd & 1 2nd rd picks for #2 this year. Thoughts?

Well, if the new report is true Griffin should be heading to the Skins. they are giving away a shitload though. Is this the biggest trade for smallest movement in draft history?

What say you? Worth it? Not worth it? Is the report bogus?

Is there someone who can check on Senor Beef? He’s going to be apoplectic.

I’ve had a long day.

Winner: Rams

If this actually happens, the 'Skins just mortgaged the franchise for a player that isn’t going to make much difference. They are not one player away from a Superbowl, and even if they were, a rookie QB would probably not be that player.

Wait. Daniel Snyder outbids everyone in the NFL to get what he wants? How surprising.

I’ll go on the record now and say the Redskins will make the playoffs no mpre than once in the next 6 years.

Huuuuuge congratulations… to the Rams. Highway robbery at its finest.

Other reports say that the Browns offered 3 first round picks, but St. Louis chose Washington anyway. Sounds like something is bullshit here. Also that the Browns made a last minute push but that it was “too late”. Too late on fucking march 9th?

Absolutely mind-boggling. What the hell could they have been thinking?

The Washington Post’s columnists have been hugely in favor of trading up for Griffin. Here, for instance, is Thomas Boswell in a recent live chat responding to a questioner:

Given their history, it’s hard for me to believe that this is a good idea, but it’s also hard not to trust Boz.

It’s a steep price and I’m a little surprised Cleveland got outbid because everyone said they were the team most interested in this pick, but if anyone is going to pull off a surprise last-second deal and outbid the whole league, it’s going to be Washington. We’ll see if that works out for them for once.

I agree, but even considering it was the Rams, how could they have lost? They were playing with house money: they had a valuable pick they didn’t need and they had at least two teams that were interested, so they were going to get a good haul. They did, so congrats to them.

I don’t understand your logic here. They’re not drafting Griffin because they think he’s going to get them to the Super Bowl this year, which he certainly won’t. They’re drafting him because they hope he’ll be a franchise QB, and those are worth a lot.

I shouldn’t say they didn’t need the pick because that team has plenty of needs. But they didn’t need the second pick in this draft and pretty much any deal was going to be a positive for them because they need picks more than they need any particular player.

Man, and I thought the trade for Carson Palmer was ridiculous. Three first-rounders and a second?

I still have scars from the Ricky Williams fiasco in New Orleans. And the infamous “wedding dress” picture. I don’t really believe in going “all in” on a player like that, which is what the 'Skins have done here. Washington has become the place free agents go to get overpaid for under performing. Even if Griffin turns out to be a franchise QB, they’ve got many gaping holes around him on both sides of the ball, and no real way to fill them outside of more free agents.

Boy howdy, ain’t that the truth?

(The rolleyes are at The Danny and the rest of the ‘brain’ trust of the Redskins, not at you, Oakminster, just in case there’s any doubt.)

And like you said, they’re so good at picking free agents.

Speaking of that, the best QB in the world isn’t much good if he doesn’t have receivers that can get open. How many years have the Redskins tried and failed to come up with another quality receiver to complement Santana Moss? (I assume they still haven’t succeeded there: last year, I just stopped paying attention to the 'Skins because I just couldn’t take it anymore. But they had the problem of no decent #2 receiver for season after season after season.)

Meanwhile, one can only hope that the Redskins can keep RGIII healthy long enough for him to mature into a good NFL QB.

As a die-hard Rams fan, I just got to say…HOORAY!

It’s a good thing he can run fast, because he’s going to be doing a lot of it next year.

 Perhaps the Browns should have put the Franchise tag on the 2nd pick.

I have no idea if the deal will be good for Washington. Shanahan’s time of glory was when Elway throwing and scrambling, and presumably he wants to recapture that. Denver was also famous for getting great results from 5th and 6th round running backs, so Shanahan might value high picks less than most coaches.

What I do want to mention, is that as a Ram’s fan, I’m pretty happy about this falling into our laps, but… in 2001, right after the brief shining Greatest Show on Turf years, the Rams had THREE first round picks, and they barely added up to squat. (Damione Lewis, Adam Archuleta, Ryan Pickett)

So, I’ll be keeping an even keel. It will be fun watching who rises and falls, and opening the extra presents on draft day, but you just never can tell.

Okay, here’s the deal:

  1. “The Redskins are not 1 player away from the Superbowl.” No shit. Nobody thinks this. Nobody.

  2. “They’ve mortgaged their future for one player.” Yes. Yes they have. Is that necessarily a bad thing? Absolutely not. It costs money to make money, everyone knows this. The Skins had a big gaping hole at QB, they have for years, and the patchwork they’ve done at the position for the last 30 years or so hasn’t worked since Joe Gibbs retired (the first time). It’s been fucking disastrous. This needed to happen. Peyton was never coming. Matt Flynn is not the answer. Kyle Orton is definitely not the answer. I’m pretty sure no one is going to argue that another year with Sexy Rexy at the helm isn’t the worst possible thing that could happen (it is).

  3. “They have gaping holes everywhere.” Again, yes, yes they do. They also have over $40 million in cap space, and they aren’t going to have to throw a giant chunk of that at RG3 like the Rams had to throw at Sam Bradford. They have big holes along the OL, they have a weak receiving corp, and an unproven running game. They also have major needs in the secondary. This is all true. But if you have all of that in place and you still have no QB to run it, you’re still going nowhere. They’ve filled the biggest gaping hole they had, and they can now move forward from there. There are quality free agents to be had at all of those positions and the Redskins get the guys they want. Everyone knows this.

Did they overpay? Only time will tell. If he turns out to be Jamarcus Russell, obviously yes. If he turns out to be Montana/Elway/Marino/Brady/etc., no price is too high. If he winds up somewhere between those two extremes, well, we’ll have to see how that shakes out. But it’s worth the gamble now, as he is the player they wanted and who they see can be their guy for the next decade+. The cupboard is pretty bare, but it’s not empty, and you need a leader to build around. It wasn’t going to be Rex, and I don’t think Ryan Tannehill was going to be that guy either. The Skins have gone with the also-rans before, even traded up to get them (Jason Campbell, Patrick Ramsey), two guys that are currently without teams (Campbell may technically still be with the Raiders, I’m not sure, but he’s definitely no longer their guy).

Bottom line, you’ve got to start building from somewhere. The Skins think he’s their guy and they did what they had to do to get him. We’ll see how it pans out, but I will reserve judgement for a couple of years, and then we’ll know what the true cost of this gamble is.

When I posted ona 49er board that the Rams were going to make out like bandits and that we should be concerned by them being so able to improve, I was met with derision. Too many personnel holes, my ass.
