Patrick Stewart dead at 86

What a loss!

I never heard that but that would have been amazing.

I’m putting on Dune '84 tonight, which was my first exposure.

And having a few drinks. It’s been a hell of a couple of weeks, and this isn’t helping.

No celebrity death has ever made me cry like this.

As I said to a friend. “Not him. He’s one of our best people.”

His family said he had “a brief and poignant battle” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

I loved him as an actor, but I’ll miss what he did outside acting even more. He was such a funny and genuinely kind person.

For me, too (and that was the first time I was aware of him). Curly hair!

He gave such a touching performance as the elderly Professor X in Logan, which came out nine years ago. I wonder if we’ll eventually learn that he was using preliminary symptoms of the Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body dementia in that role. It was a brave choice in any case, as he did seem utterly helpless. Very poignant.

(I learned about his passing from a Ken Jennings post on Bluesky: simply a photo of Picard playing the flute from the STNG episode The Inner Light, said to be Stewart’s favorite.)

Same for me.

I must go rewatch his cameo on Family Guy where TNG cast goes bowling.

“Now, why exactly can I not wear my loafers? What is the danger there? Well, I think it’s just because they want another $1.50 from me”

For me, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Michael J Fox/Christopher Lloyd…

But this is a hard one too, RIP Sir Patrick Stewart.

I keep reminding myself that when people get up into their mid-80s and beyond, you really need to be prepared to let them go. But it doesn’t make it easier.

Most fans agree that It’s one of the best episodes of STNG. But of course, it only worked because Stewart had already done such a great job of developing the character.

Seems unlikely: if he was already showing symptoms that long ago, it’s unlikely he would have been healthy enough to star in the Picard show that was running from 2020 to 2023.

There was a project to get “Transmetropolitan” made into some series or something… And yes, Patrick Stewart was being floated as the actor to play Spider Jerusalem.

And Patrick Stewart himself wanted! He loved the comic and loved that character. I am absolutely certain that, had they made that series, he would have been MAGNIFICENT in that role!

Which was not even the first time he voiced a talking sheep.

I’m not usually easily upset by celebrity deaths, but yeah, this one hurts. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without Captain Picard, and Picard never would’ve been Picard if not for Stewart.

Picard just wrapped a couple years ago.

Patrick seemed ageless.

I always enjoyed his work.

RIP

And I’m off to rewatch his cameo on Extras.

“You’re not married, you haven’t got a girlfriend… and you’ve never watched Star Trek?…Good lord.”

Yeah this sucks. I’ve always been more a Star Wars nerd than a Trekkie, but in college I got hooked on TNG. It came on every night at midnight on some cable channel, and I watched it religiously before bed. It was his portrayal of Picard that drew me on and got me hooked.

“But it’s too late. I’ve seen everything.”

Yes, the level of nuance in his acting was what made that episode so moving.

That’s true.

(He really does leave an amazing body of work.)
