I was watching the supplemental material on the seventh season DVD set of ST:TNG and Patrick Stewart said that he had once made what was considered to be a racist joke on the set of the show. He was confronted by Michael “Worf” Dorn and LeVar “Geordi” Burton who explained that the joke was offensive. Stewart said he was happy that the two actors did confront him to show him the error of his ways. Has anybody ever heard this before?
No. But so what? He said something insensitive, it was pointed out to him that he’d said something insensitive, he took the note and mended his ways.
Where’s the threadworthiness here?
That’ll teach him to tell the one about the blind Klingon…
There’s this thing called curiosity. I’ve followed Trek in its many incarnations for years and I would have thought something like this would’ve gotten some press. What are you, the thread police?
I think Blue Sky just wants to know more about what happened – and perhaps what the comment was. It’s a valid question.
Sorry, Mr. BS (and sorry for this bad joke, too ) – can’t help you. I’ve never heard of this incident either.
<start sarcasm>I heard that once on the set, Patrick Stewart accidently bumped into one of the other actors & said, “excuse me.” I’m not sure if it’s true or not.<end sarcasm>
I think that’s the point Fiver was making.
Well, evidently Patrick Stewart himself thought it worthy of mention on the DVD. So, really, curiosity is probably not inappropriate.
Count me in as one of the obsessive geeks with too much time on their hands that would like to know the story, Fiver and Levdrakon.
Really… if you’re a big enough fan to own the Season DVDs and watch the commentary, is it that much of a leap of logic to think you’d want to know the full story on a vague anecdote?
If this incident was supposed to be kept “in house”, then he shouldn’t have brought it up. Since he has, I’d like to know what happened.
God I hate when people judge whether something is threadworthy. Just ignore the ones you aren’t interested, like everyone else.
I personally am mildly interested, and would like to hear the joke (if that were possible) to judge how bad it was. Because I’m just curious.
Well, the last season of NG was in 93-94 and political correctness was in full swing by then. So it could have been something ridiculously innocuous.
Maybe he told Worf & Geordi to get to the back of the tachyon pulse…
Minor hijack.
A possibility, albiet very remote.
Jimmy (DY-NO-MITE) Walker said this on a late night talk show in the late 80’s “…the only black man on the show, and he is wearing shades.”
J.J. saying this was funny. Stewart could not pull it off.
I too, am curious what he said.
It was during the episode where things go wrong on the holodeck and everyone is fighting for thier lives to get out before the holodeck takes control of the ship. Remeber that one? Yeah, during the filming of that one Patty called LaVar a “Scat King” and told him to go back to Reading Rainbow. he thought Patty said “blackie” and told him to go “ride a rainbow back to africa” and, well, you know the rest.
Now that is funny.
