I just got around to watching this last night and I still think this show is great.
Why do they keep Chumlee around? What a load this guy is! He seems like the kind of guy that it was fun to drink beer with when you were 19 years old, but there is no way I would want to work with him.
Chum: “I thought that was where the wax was.”
Rick: “You just learned about the wax! Why would you have thought that before!”
Good stuff.
And did I hear him right? Ten percent interest per MONTH on pawned items? Isn’t there usury laws against that? I understand that these aren’t A rated borrowers, but they are secured loans. I want to go into the pawn business for those rates.
Yeah, when I first saw the commercial, it looked dumb, but somehow it just works. And it’s actually more history related than most other shows that are on the History Channel.
Well, since you only have so much time to repay the loan before it ends (4 months?), the interest does get too high.
I enjoy the show, kind of a guilty pleasure. Chum seems to accept the role of stupid guy and probably plays it up a little. A lot of that interpersonal stuff seems stagey and the show would be better off without it.
Interesting how the main guy always has the same routine when haggling.
Buying totally trashed items and paying to have them restored seems like a very questionable business model. I wonder if the network subsidizes these to keep the show interesting.
Actually that’s my favorite part of the show. I just lost my Dad last year, and the whole interaction reminds me of my Dad and grandfather. Although those guys are very different from us, it reminds me of them a lot.
What about the old man with his cuss jar? If you watch the episodes, he swears more than the other two guys.
